Broadus Teams Win on First Weekend of Play

Volleyball

The Broadus Lady Hawk Volleyball team won their opening match of the season in three straight games, at Ekalaka last Saturday.

The Lady Hawks came out strong in the first game against Ekalaka, which had lost several of their stand out players last year to graduation. Broadus won the first game 25-18.

"We came out strong, and I think we surprised Ekalaka," Broadus Head Volleyball Coach Gordon Archer beamed as he described his team's play, during an interview on Monday.

As so often happens in volleyball, a bit of a momentum shift took place in the second game, but Broadus was able to hold off the Ekalaka Lady Bulldogs to win the second game, 26-24. "We had a number of different girls step up when things mattered, and that made the difference in the win," Archer said.

In the third game, Broadus continued to play well, and pulled out the win, 25-22, to take the match in three straight games.

"I'm really proud of the girls for how they played against Ekalaka. We've got some things to work on, but it's early in the season, and I see us progressing as time goes on," Archer commented on the match.

The young Lady Hawk team will have their work cut out for them against two experienced teams this week, as they travel to Circle on Friday, and host Forsyth on Saturday. Archer said that Circle's team features a number of seniors on their squad, and won both of their matches over the opening weekend. On Saturday, Broadus faces a non-conference Forsyth team, featuring 6'7" middle hitter Lindsey Hein.

The Broadus Hawk Varsity Football team started out their season with a win last weekend, as Broadus defeated the Plentywood Wildcats at home, with a score of 14-6. The initial schedule was changed after Lodge Grass cancelled its fall sports season, meaning both Eastern C sub-conferences were combined into one conference. Broadus will now play each team in the conference once, and will also have a bye week in late September.

The Hawks enter the season with 25 players on the roster, a big boost from last year. The additions to the roster include a large number of freshmen athletes, and Broadus Head Coach Ross Randall credits his assistant coaching staff with helping to mold these young players into a cohesive unit. "Zach Marengo has taken over as our line coach, and he's helped immensely," Randall commented during a Monday interview. "Matt Hagedorn and Cass Zimmer have been working with the team on their footwork, and we saw that work out well against Plentywood, where plays that last year we would've taken for a loss in yards were turned into positive yardage."

Early in the first quarter, Broadus quarterback Wyatt Gee connected with Corbin Irish for a 75 yard touchdown catch, followed by a two-point conversion throw to tight end Aidan Kenelly.

The Hawks turned around and did a very admirable job of shutting down Plentywood's defense, which lasted throughout the game. Plentywood's only score in the game came on a pick six when Morgan Cummings of Plentywood intercepted Wyatt Gee's throw, running it back for a touchdown. The two point conversion was unsuccessful, putting the score at 8-6 Broadus. Later in the third quarter, Broadus answered back with another touchdown throw from Gee to Corbin Irish, to put the score at 14-6, where it would remain until the end of the game.

Randall put a lot of emphasis on his team's defensive play during the game, noting that even after the first interception, Broadus players kept their minds in the game and bent but didn't break. A second half turnover by Broadus put the Wildcats in striking distance, but yet again Broadus held off the onslaught, and kept the score positive.

Broadus was helped out considerably by Johnny Richards, who made two interceptions in the game, as well as rushing for 75 yards.

"The defense did a good job of keeping the ball in front of them.

Plentywood completed some passes, but we effectively shut down their run game," Randall said. Plentywood made 27 rushing attempts for 24 yards, or .9 yards per attempt. Broadus had 131 yards rushing as a team, on 35 attempts, averaging 3.7 yards per carry.

In the passing game, Plentywood had 125 yards, while Broadus had 136 yards.

Broadus will travel to Ekalaka to play this Friday; the game will start at 7 pm. Randall told us Ekalaka remains a solid team this season, only losing one of their star players from last season.

From there, Broadus travels to Scobey on 9/11, Culbertson on 9/18, has a bye week the final weekend of September, then returns to Broadus for two home games in a row, against Circle on 10/3 and MonDak on 10/9. On 10/16 Broadus travel to Fairview, then finishes out the regular season at home on 10/23 against Forsyth.

In JV football news, the team traveled to Plentywood on Monday, winning 14-8.
