First year 4-H member Reece Emmons had a good Fair. Winning Grand Champion market beef at the Powder River County Fair, wasn't enough; her steer "Stan" then topped the beef carcass contest and was the only steer earning the Steer of Merit (SOM) rating. Reece received a buckle donated by the Craig and Christine Appleman Family. Reece and Stan then went to Eastern Montana Fair in Miles City to compete in the Champion of Champions show against the top two steers from seven counties. She placed fourth in that show and is waiting to see where she lands in the carcass contest.
The judge at the Eastern Montana Fair, impressed with Reece's age and inexperience said, "this young exhibitor is ten years old. All I can say to the rest of you is look out!"
Sharing the glory at the Eastern Montana Fair was Jayce Schroeder, Reserve Grand Champion market beef exhibitor at the Powder River County Fair. Jayce represented the county well with a fifth-place finish in the ring.
All the carcasses were evaluated by ultrasound. The technician was Elin Kittelmann, NSIP/UGC Certified Ultrasound Technician from Ekalaka.
Placing second in the Powder River County beef carcass contest was Jordyn Schroeder, whose steer moved up from third place in the show ring. Rheanna Schroeder's third place steer boasted an 18.6" ribeye, the largest of all in the contest. Cash awards for the top three winners in the beef carcass contest were sponsored by The Body Shop Physical Therapy and Lester and Dawn Aye.
In the Market Hog carcass contest, Shyla Madsen's hog weighing in at 280 pounds placed first, from a third-place finish in the show ring. She received a buckle donated by Fleming & Long Insurance. Shyla's brother Ashton's hog made a huge leap from placing seventeenth in the ring to second place on the rail. Placing third in the hog carcass contest was Jayce Schroeder, up from fifth place in the ring. The top three exhibitors will split a cash award sponsored by Northwest Farm Credit Services and Denbury Onshore. The top three hogs, plus hogs placing fourth through sixth exhibited by Lauryn Billing, Abigail Krantz and Addison Harper earned the Symbol of Excellence rating from the Montana Pork Producers.
In the lamb carcass contest, Addison Randall's third place lamb in the ring placed first in the carcass show. She received a buckle sponsored by the Edwards Ranch. Danica Schroeder's lamb placed second, rising from an 8th place in the ring; followed by Jordyn Schroeder, whose lamb placed 5th in the ring. Cash awards for the lamb carcass contest were sponsored by Askin Construction and Jim & Emily Madsen.
