Fifth graders meet actor
Bo Denson’s fifth grade class enjoyed a special field trip last week to the Tom Trusler Ranch, which included attending a branding, touring the Trusler Mansion, and meeting movie star Tom Berenger.
After arriving, the class was given a guided tour of the mansion by Mrs. Suzanne Trusler, who explained its many special features. They then watched the branding and met Berenger, a guest of the family.
Berenger’s fame includes acting in such box office hits as Platoon, Major League and Born on the Fourth of July, plus many others. He is currently starring in a movie to be filmed in Montana, in which Mrs. Trusler plays his mother.
A traditional branding dinner was served by the hostess, and some of the students were given horseback rides.
“It was a very enjoyable day for all of us,” said Mrs. Denson. “We would like to thank Mrs. Trusler for her gracious hospitality.”
Band having “great time” on Seattle trip
Broadus high school band members are having a “great time” on their Seattle trip according to Stephanie Rollings, who called the Examiner Tuesday morning to report on their adventures to date. After leaving Broadus Sunday morning, May 27, the group arrived in Butte late that afternoon, where they toured the Copper King Mansion and the Butte “pit”, now filled with water.
They spent the night in Missoula and continued on the following morning. En route to Seattle, the band toured the Cataldo Mission at the Cataldo State Park in Idaho. At a rest stop in Washington, several the students saw their first seagulls. Then, about 90 miles out of Seattle, they experienced another first, a traffic jam. The hour’s delay caused them to miss most of the Seattle Mariners, Milwaukee Brewers baseball game, in the Kingdome. They were still able, however, to witness “The Wave” which caused the entire stadium to move, Stephanie said. A fireworks display followed the game.
“We’re all having a great time and we’re looking forward to today,” said the reporter.

Academic fitness award winners honored
Seven Broadus Elementary School sixth graders received the Presidential Academic Fitness Award, presented by Principal Hal Hawley Thursday.
Receiving the award were Michelle Perkins, Jami Jo Capp, Lincoln Best, Melissa Mangen, Kendra Patten, Bobbie Jo Smith, and Ben Vernon.
“This award is granted for maintaining a B+ average in elementary school and scoring at or above the 80th percentile on the Iowa Achievement test battery,” explained Hawley. “Michelle led the group with a 3.94 grade point average and a score ranking her in the 99th percentile on the achievement tests. Each of these students are to be commended for consistent good work.”
The Powder River Bank awarded a $50 savings bond to Michelle for her outstanding achievement.
Hawley said that the competition for the prestigious award is very stiff, as over 80 percent of Broadus Elementary School students score above the national average on achievement tests annually.
A certificate signed by President George Bush will be mailed to each student later.
Hawley went on to thank the parents of the students at Broadus Elementary. “Our students wouldn’t achieve at this high level without having supportive parents,” he said.
