Academic Olympics is sponsored by the Southeastern Montana Association of School Superintendents with the help of surrounding schools and their staff. Miles Community College provides the facilities and use of their scantron machine, which is greatly appreciated.
On Tuesday, March 10, 2020 the Broadus Junior High, consisting of 7th and 8th graders competed in Miles City, Montana against 11 other area schools.
In the 8th grade division there were 53 participants, with 6 from Broadus, who took the written test. The students from Broadus did a fine job and all placed well. Mia Mader placed 15th, Ciara McDowell 18th, Eli Heacock and Emma Isaacs placed 20th, Cooper Zimmer 24th and Graci Barbero 28th.
In the 7th grade there were 48 participants, with 4 from Broadus, who also took the test. These students did a great job for their first year competing. Archer Edwards placed 6th, Rebekah Rasmussen 7th and they both received ribbons. Jackson Knapp placed 14th, Shyla Madsen 17th, Kail Irish 18th and Jayce Schroeder 34th.
The written test places the teams for the afternoon oral rounds. The Broadus A Team was Cooper Zimmer, Emma Isaacs, Ciara McDowell, Archer Edwards, Shyla Madsen and Jayce Schroeder. This team placed 7th out of 18 teams in the oral rounds and 13th out of the 18 based on the written test. Team B consisting of Mia Mader, Eli Heacock, Graci Barbero, Jackson Knapp, Rebekah Rasmussen, and Kail Irish, placed 9th on the written test but was beat out in the oral rounds.
On Wednesday, March 11, 2020 the Broadus High School, consisting of 21 participants competed in Miles City against 11 area schools.
This year 5 seniors competed from Broadus, Bailey Smith who placed 3rd in the written test and received a medal. Luke Herzog earned 4th place and a ribbon, Tayden Gee 10th, Callie Williams 18th and Erick McConnon 21st out of 30 seniors.
The junior class had 6 juniors. Kortny Cathey earned a 7th placed finish, Megan Johnson 10th, Joziah Brost 13th, Luke McAlpine 14th, Deanna Twedt 23rd and Kyle Minow 24th out of 40 juniors.
In the sophomore class, 4 sophomores competed. Rachel Rasmussen placed 8th, Wyatt Gee 11th, Lea Aye 17th, and Abigail Martin 20th out of 30 participants.
The 9th graders had 6 competitors. Alex Edwards placed 4th earning a ribbon, Rheanna Schroeder 12th, Lucinda Cain 13th, Dillon Gee 14th, Marcus Mader 16th, Lauryn Billing 17th out of 34 freshmen.
In the written test there were 25 teams competing. Team A, consisting of Bailey Smith, Kortney Cathey, Wyatt Gee, Marcus Mader, Archer Edwards, Callie Williams and Abigail Martin placed 5th. Team B, consisting of Luke Herzog, Megan Johnson, Rachel Rasmussen, Lauryn Billing, Rheanna Schroeder, Luke McAlpine and Erick McConnon placed 6th. Team C, consisting of Tayden Gee, Joziah Brost, Deanna Twedt, Lea Aye, Lucinda Cain, Kyle Minow, and Dillon Gee placed 12th. Team A competed in the championship round and defeated Wibaux. Their win gave Broadus the traveling trophy.
Congratulations to everyone who participated. I’m very proud of the representation made for our school by these students! Way to go!
