Remember to set your clocks forward an hour this Saturday night, as Daylight Saving Time begins at 2 AM, Sunday morning.

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is an outdated and archaic remnant of a bygone era, originally organized by the Germans and the Austro-Hungarian Empire during WWI in an attempt to try and save energy during the war. In the United States, a form of Daylight Saving was initially instituted in WWI and WWII, and eventually the Uniform Time Act was signed into law in 1966 by Lyndon Johnson, disrupting people’s sleep schedules ever since.

Studies have shown that in the week after the spring DST change there are increases in traffic accidents, heart attacks, and economic losses resulting from worker inefficiency due to sleep loss.

In this reporter’s humble opinion, the time has long since come to abandon the DST change. People aren’t saving a great deal of energy keeping the lights on for one less hour in the summer if they’re cranking the AC for three solid months and incessantly scrolling through their Netflix queue for half of every night. ~ BS
