By Speech and Drama Coach Caroline Johnson
WOW! What a magnificent season the Speech and Drama students have had this year! We had multiple wins throughout the season in both Speech and Drama Events. We traveled to Roundup for our B/C Divisional on Saturday, January 25th. Samantha Perry performed her humorous drama adaptation of Bob Newhart's skit, "First Night on the Job, King Kong". She did a fabulous job even though she was recovering from a hard bout of the flu just days before. She placed 9th out of 15 competitors, unfortunately only the top 6 advanced to state. Four of our team advanced to state: Luke placed 4th in pantomime; Megan placed 2nd in Dramatic Oral Interpretation; Erick and Deanna placed 6th in Humorous Duo. The Broadus Speech Team (comprised of one student) brought home a 3rd place Class C Speech Sweeps Trophy from the Divisional Invitational Meet!
On Thursday, January 30th, we made the long drive to Bigfork, MT for our two day State Finals Competition, which began on January 31st. We had 4 students competing in 3 events. Our lone senior, Erick McConnon, competed with first year junior, Deanna Twedt in their very humorous piece, A Bloodless Macbeth; and placed 15th coming just mere points from the 14 place cutoff for semifinals. Luke McAlpine, a junior and first year thespian, placed 10th in the Semifinal round performing his original pantomime skit, Pickpocket's Plunder. Last but not least, rounding out our Speech team was Megan Johnson who placed 11th in her semifinal round performing an excerpt from Bullied, Bungled and Botched by DM Larson in the Dramatic Oral Interpretation event. We may not have had any finalists at State, but all our competitors worked hard all season. I would like to thank everyone that made it to our Open House on Tuesday, January 28th. We had the most we've ever had in the past few years. Your support was just what we needed to finish strong. I would also like to thank Mariah Perry for being our "Drama Mama". She spent countless hours on the road and cheering us on at all of our meets. I couldn't have done it without her help and support. And lastly, I want to thank the school for supporting us with vehicles, funds, and allowing us to participate in these events.
It saddens my heart that my time working with this season's incredible students is coming to an end, but we will have plenty of spots available next year on our team. We hope that many students will give Speech and Drama a try...you never know....you might just LOVE it!
