Broadus hosted Terry last Friday for varsity basketball games, with the Hawk JV and Girls Varsity traveling to play in Plevna on Saturday.
Boys
The Hawks got out to a stagnant start against Terry, going down 0-4 early, before roaring back on three straight 3 pointers to lead 19-8 after the first quarter. The Hawks maintained a steady lead through the second and third quarter or around 8-12 points, and thoroughly cemented their lead in the fourth quarter to win the game 54-31.
Broadus Boys Coach Mike Richard said that the team did a great job of getting the ball inside to the big men during the game, which showed in the scoring, as the Hawks were led by Dillon Gee with 17 and Tayden Gee with 15, while the third Gee brother, Wyatt, added 7 assists and 4 of his own points.
"The team did a great job of finishing plays and the game, and I'm proud of them for the win," Richards commented.
The Hawks will now go to St. Labre on Friday to try and avenge an early season close loss. Richards hopes to have a better handle on turnovers this time around; the first time around Broadus had 31 turnovers in the 58-65 loss.
On Saturday, Broadus will host NCTS (Busby) for a conference game. Busby currently sits 7th in the conference at 2-7, compared to the Hawk's 4th place and 5-4 record. Busby has had some more players become eligible since the first game where Broadus won 78-45, so the results are far from cut and dried.
A change to the schedule on Saturday means that JV games will now be played, with the Girls JV beginning at 1 pm, and Boys JV planned for 2:30, Girls Varsity at 4, and Boys Varsity at 5:30.
The Boys JV team won handily at Plevna, 51-28.
Girls
The Broadus Girls Varsity team picked up two wins over the weekend to improve to a 4-6 conference record, placing them in 6th place out of 9 teams.
The win against Terry showed Broadus giving up their fewest turnovers of the season during conference play, in a 50-14 win.
Coach Kacey Stanley was not available for an interview, but the stats for the game were gleaming for Broadus, with Oliveah Schaffer leading the team with 11 points. The entire team got playing time, with many scoring or contributing on the boards or away from the basket during the conference win.
Broadus then won against Plevna on Saturday, with a much closer score than the previous evening. Broadus led 8-7 after the first quarter, with Plevna coming back to lead 13-12 in the waning minutes of the second quarter. Broadus pulled ahead in the third to lead 29-22, winning the game 42-28.
Abi Krantz led the Lady Hawks in scoring against Plevna, with 11 point, as well as 5 steals.
The Lady Hawks will face a tough St. Labre team Friday; the first time around St. Labre won by 50 points. On Saturday, Broadus will face the 7-2 Northern Cheyenne team, which beat Broadus in their previous meeting 61-45, in a game featuring technical fouls and ejections.
