Hawk Wrestlers compete at Forsyth

A planned tournament in Forsyth last weekend didn’t work out as well as Broadus Head Wrestling Coach Frankie Schoonover had originally planned – the long-standing tournament suffered from low attendance so event organizers decided to only hold a mixer on Friday, and cancel the Saturday tournament.

Despite the change in plans, Broadus wrestlers were able to gain some much-needed experience in matches against Miles City’s JV squad, Circle, Baker, and Forsyth on Friday. Schoonover said that despite the low attendance, the competition was stiff – seven wrestlers at the tournament were in the top three of their weight class at the state level.

The Broadus wrestlers were able to apply lessons learned in practice in higher intensity situations at Forsyth, according to Schoonover, and use the matches to their advantage in order to improve.

Corbin Irish wrestled in four tough matches, while Kyle Minow was able to win against a Baker opponent, a huge success for Minow. Seth McDowell went into overtime with a Miles City opponent, gaining experience despite a tough loss.

Schoonover said the Forsyth tournament was almost a blessing in disguise, as a nasty flu had invaded the Broadus school system last week. At one point, around 1/4 of the the junior high and high school were out sick, and the wrestling room was not immune to the scourge of illness. Thus the rather light schedule allowed the wrestlers a chance to recover, and hopefully come back strong this week, as a full schedule awaits.

For the first time in five years, Broadus will host a mixer January 23, beginning at 6:30 pm. Wrestlers from Circle and Baker will be here for the event, while Wrestling Manager Tawna Quiroz will be honored as a Senior midway through the event. Schoonover is looking forward to the mixer, mentioning that it’s good for the community and good for the young, up and coming wrestlers to see what the sport is all about, and witness it firsthand at home.

Both Circle and Baker teams will stay in Broadus Thursday night, then all three teams will head for the Moorcroft tournament on Friday, staying the night and wrestling Saturday.

The full Broadus team is expected to attend Moorcroft: Seth McDowell wrestling at 126 lbs, Corbin Irish at 138, Dakota Holbrook at 170, Kyle Minow at 182, and Josiah Middle Rider at 205.
