Both Broadus varsity basketball teams enjoyed success over the weekend, with three of the four games won by the PRCDHS teams. On Friday, boys and girls teams traveled to Wibaux, while on Saturday Broadus hosted Custer/Hysham.
Boys
In the Hawks first meeting with Wibaux, the Hawks were able to decimate the Longhorns, 68-18, in large part due to the absence of Wibaux's Tel Lunde, a talented athlete who had been injured in football season. On Friday, Lunde was back on the court, and both he and Wibaux's Colten Miske were able to make for a much more challenging game than the first meeting.
Wibaux got out to an early lead, which the Hawks quickly overcame to lead 13-9 after the first quarter. Wibaux battled back to lead 29-24 at halftime, and in the third quarter Lunde re-injured his ankle, taking him out of the game. Broadus took the lead once again, going up by as much as 10 points before Miske hit four three pointers to bring the score within four in the fourth quarter. In the end, the Broadus offensive assault was too much for Wibaux, as Broadus brought home another win, 56-47.
Broadus led Wibaux in the majority of offensive categories versus Wibaux, with Johnny Richards and Tayden Gee both leading the team with 12 points a piece.
Custer/Hysham has struggled this season, with only one conference win on the season going into the weekend. Broadus Head Coach Mike Richards made some changes to the starting line up going into the game, noting that "Saturday was a good night to get the bench a lot of playing time."
The Hawks went up early and kept ahead throughout the game to win 61-36. The win delighted the home crowd, which packed the Hawk Dome to see their home team play, as well as to check out a delightful Hawk Cheer Kids Camp cheerleading performance put on by Heather Naugle, featuring a number of up and coming young cheerleaders.
Leading the Hawks off the bench in scoring was Dillon Gee with 14 points, followed by Beau Kuhbacher with 11 points, and Tayden Gee with 10.
Coach Richards mentioned that every Broadus bench player was able to score against Custer/Hysham.
The Hawk JV Team played against Wibaux, winning 43-36. The boys JV did not play Custer/Hysham.
The Hawk team went into the weekend 5th in the conference. They now sit at 4-4 in conference, which puts them in 4th place behind Melstone, Ekalaka, and Jordan, followed closely by Terry at 3-4.
This Friday Broadus will host Terry. Richards says that from what he's seen, Terry has played well in some games but not so well in others, though they have foreign exchange students which have improved their team. So the Friday game is expected to be competitive. Only Varsity games will be played, with the girls starting at 5:30, and the boys scheduled for 7:00.
On Saturday, only the JV boys team will play at Plevna, while only the Varsity team will play at Plevna for the girls, with the JV boys game beginning at 4:00.
Girls
Lady Hawk Head Coach Kacey Stanley knew her team would have their work cut out for them going to Wibaux last Friday, as the Lady Longhorns sat at 5-1 in conference, and second place going into the weekend, while Broadus was in 8th, with a 1-5 record.
At the beginning of the game, the Lady Hawks surprised Wibaux by coming out to an early 2-0 lead, keeping the score close after the first quarter, down 4-10. Wibaux came alive in the second quarter, going up 27-7 over the Lady Hawks, and scored steadily throughout the second half to beat Broadus 60-20.
Lacey Robinson led the Lady Hawks in scoring with 6 points on the evening.
The game against Custer/ Hysham on Saturday was an entirely different story compared to Friday. The Lady Hawks came alive and played well under pressure, with the lead changing 3 times during the game.
Custer/Hysham came out to an early lead, before Broadus battled back in the late minutes of the first quarter. The lead see-sawed back and forth, but Broadus was able to keep turnovers down and hit key free throws when they needed them, in order to pull out a conference win at home 41-32. The Lady Hawk team was collectively seen beaming from ear to ear as the clock struck triple zeros in the fourth quarter, with Broadus pulling into 6th in conference standings from the win.
"I'm really proud of the team for pulling out the win," Coach Stanley commented during a Monday interview. "We knew it would be a fairly evenly matched game going in, and we made key plays when it mattered to get the win."
Abi Krantz led the Lady Hawks in scoring against Custer/Hysham, with 15 points, while Oliveah Schaffer had 11 points.
In Lady Hawk JV action, Broadus lost to Wibaux 22-29, but won against Custer/ Hysham, 46-15.
The Lady Hawks now play an 0-8 Terry team on Friday, and a 1-6 Plevna team on Saturday.
