The Hawk Wrestlers descended on Miles City last Friday and Saturday, for the 62nd Annual Miles City Cowboy Invitational Tournament.
Teams invited to compete included Broadus along with Billings Senior, Billings Skyview, Billings West, Billings Central, Laurel, Lockwood, Hettinger-Scranton (North Dakota), Huntley Project, Glasgow, Moorcroft (Wyoming), Circle, Hardin, Cody (Wyoming), Shepherd, Worland (Wyoming), Glendive, Livingston, Alexander (North Dakota), Baker, Forsyth, Bowman (North Dakota), Columbus-Absarokee-Park City, Buffalo (South Dakota), Lemmon (South Dakota), Colstrip, Red Lodge, along with Miles City.
The tournament got underway Friday, with Broadus wrestlers all losing out of the main tournament in short order. We spoke with Broadus Head Coach Frankie Schoonover, who said that the young team was simply overwhelmed by the intensity of the tournament, so they came home Friday and went straight to work at practice, in order to help the team refocus for the next day.
The team returned to the mats in Miles City on Saturday for the Second Chance Tournament, where the Broadus wrestlers were able to compete against others who had lost out on Friday.
Schoonover said that during warms ups and throughout the matches on Saturday, he could see a marked change from the previous day in how the team handled the pressure, and the team wrestled much better as a whole on Saturday.

Schoonover spoke of pros and cons he saw in each wrestler during the meet: “Dakota never lost a match on Saturday, and did great overall. Seth needs to work on his confidence. Corbin wrestled well, and I was glad to see him go up Sunday for the AAU tournament. Kyle wrestled well but his lack of experience showed in Miles City. Josiah had some wins; he was able to slow down and apply what he’s been taught, and that translated into some wins. This was Christian’s first tournament, and he had trouble dealing with the stress and keeping focus. When he becomes able to handle the stress, I see him getting good as he’s fast and strong.”
The Hawks will travel to Forsyth this weekend, for a match featuring many competitors which they will face at Divisionals, which are coming up fast – after Forsyth there’s Moorcroft, then Hardin, then Divisionals in Huntley. Schoonover is looking to make a statement at Forsyth, so the Hawks will be working hard in practice this week to make that happen.
Coach Schoonover is tentatively planning to host a dual mixer in Broadus next Thursday with Circle and Baker, before all three teams take off for Moorcroft on Friday.
On Sunday, young Hawk wrestlers strutted their stuff at the AAU Tournament in Miles City, with great results. Riggin Schaffer won 3rd in the School Boy Division (130-133 lbs). Tyler Jurica won 1st place in the Midget Division (61-66 lbs). Kail Irish won 1st in the Novice Division (100-105 lbs), and Reuben Kinzer won 1st in the Novice (140-147 lb) Division.
