School Board conducts January meeting

The Broadus School Board met Monday night to discuss the January agenda. Elementary PE & HS Driver’s Ed Teacher Jerry Coulter discussed his roles in the school. Jerry went over the elementary physical education program, noting that the vast majority of students in the elementary are performing at or above national fitness standards. He also discussed the driver’s ed program and changes that have been implemented over the years. Coulter noted that when he retires, he recommends the school find or train a teacher to instruct driver’s ed, as well as find someone to continue the elementary PE program.

The Board then went on to hire Cody Earley as a 4th grade classroom aide, as well as hiring Zachary Marengo as a substitute teacher.

Activities Director Mike Richards spoke with the board about proposed MHSA changes to the various athletic programs. A variety of proposed changes are in the works for the upcoming meeting. Some items up for consideration include Girls Wrestling and Boys Power Lifting as sports.

The board next considered changes to the classified salary and benefits for the 2020-22 school year. A vote was passed to add a new title (though not a new position) of Elementary Administration Assistant, which will see a pay raise compared to the current K-6 Secretary.

A vote to adopt the school calendar for next year was tabled, as discussion is still ongoing involving the scheduling of days around semester tests.

The board voted on and approved a motion to set a balance of $500 in the petty cash fund.

Last on the agenda was the second reading of Board Policy 1710 – to utilize non-lethal self defense product Reflex Protect. As noted noted in last month’s board article, the school is considering the purchase of a CS gel, which may be used by teachers in faculty in the case of a school shooter or other violent incident.

Board Member Rob Jones had been in contact with the manufacturer during the last month to discuss prices and training for teachers. The cans vary in price between 32 and 50 dollars depending on setup, and have a 4 year shelf life.

Jones commented on the CS devices: “My opinion is they are worth having. If you spend the money and never use them, that’s money well spent on a preventative measure. If you spend the money and someday have to use them, they’re worth every penny.”

The board moved and approved a motion to purchase the products, with the training and implementation forthcoming.

The next meeting of the board will take place February 10th at 7 PM.
