Weeds to be aware of, herbicide resistance, forage quality, ration balancing and the importance of staying safe on the ranch are all topics that will be discussed at the annual Extension Ag Winter Series scheduled for Tuesday, January 21st, according to Extension Agent Mary Rumph.

The program will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the Broadus Community Center. One private applicator recertification credit will be available.

The first speaker, Dr. Tim Seipel, MSU Extension Cropland Weed Specialist, will address

Combatting Herbicide Resistance. Dr. Seipel will explain why herbicide resistance happens and discuss weed management strategies to help prevent resistance. Seipel will also talk about common cropland weeds in Southeastern Montana and their control. He will also address the growing concern about palmer amaranth, a weed that has been devastating in the Midwest and has been spread via tainted millet seed.

Is this hay any good? Forage Quality and Ration Balancing will be the focus of Dr. Megan VanEmon, MSU Extension Beef Cattle Specialist, based at Fort Keogh Research Station, Miles City. She will discuss how to determine hay quality, including how factors like rain, mold and mycotoxins can affect hay quality. She will share ration balancing strategies to make use of lower quality hay, while also addressing commercial supplements, grain and other forage options.

Reducing Liability Through Safe Practices

Ranching and farming is an environment that daily presents the opportunity for accidents, injuries and even fatalities… there are so many ways to get hurt when working with livestock and machinery!

Jim Larson with the Montana Ag Safety Program will discuss minimizing the liability farmers and ranchers face today in an environment that presents the opportunity for accident, injuries and even fatalities.
