The Powder River County Sheriff’s Office now has a window tint meter, which gauges the darkness of windows. The deputies will be using this gauge to check vehicles to ensure they fall within legal limits.
Montana statute limits window tint to allow light transmission of no less than 24% on the front windows of vehicles, and tint is limited to 14% light transmission on rear side windows and back windows. Factory vehicle tint tends to fall within these statutes, but some DIY kits are much darker. Factory windows often have the tint number listed on the window.
Sheriff Drane told us that those found in violation will likely be given a warning and a timeframe in which to remove the tint, before fines are levied. A violation carries the potential for an $85 fine.
