Ag Expo draws a crowd

On Wednesday, November 13, the Powder River Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture held their Powder River Ag Expo at the Fairgrounds in Broadus.

A sizable crowd toured the event, with folks coming and going throughout the afternoon and early evening.

The Expo focused on several agricultural themes.

A trade show featuring thirty-three vendors allowed attendees to discover new products which may benefit their ranching businesses, while a petting zoo provided furry entertainment for the kids.

The Broadus FFA provided a farm safety demonstration, including ATV safety, and the dangers of Power Take-Off, or PTO shafts. A tractor provided by MT Tractor of Broadus was used in the demonstration, which consisted of a "dummy" becoming entangled in a running PTO, clearly demonstrating one of the more dangerous pieces of equipment on a ranch.

TRECO had a power safety demonstration, which provided information on electricity and the dangers therein. TRECO employees even cooked a hot dog on a hot electrical line, which was a part of the electrical safety training trailer they used for the event.

A raffle was held for door prizes, donated by the trade show vendors, while some of the vendors also had samples or free swag for attendees to take home.

In the evening, a dinner of soup, chili, and desserts was provided by Somebody's Mama's Kitchen, with beef for the chili donated by Fighting Butte Cattle Company. According to the Chamber's Treasurer, Jessica Malone, one hundred thirty four people had dinner at the event.

Meanwhile the Big Sky Bar was on hand to provide drinks of the alcoholic variety, for those who chose to partake.

Diners and drinkers were then provided with entertainment by several local artists, including the music of Tom Minow, cowboy poetry by Sandy Stahl, and an interesting presentation on Agritourism by Bob Thaden of Tongue River Winery.

Jessica Malone summed up the Ag Expo: "All in all, I would say it was a pretty successful event."

The Powder River Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture plans on holding a similar event next year. The Chamber welcomes feedback or suggestions if folks feel there are changes which would benefit futures events.
