Speech and Drama off to a Roaring Start

By Caroline Johnson

Lights, Camera, Action! Well, not quite, but we are well on our way to another great season. Powder River County District High School proudly announces the opening of it’s 2019 Speech and Drama season. Shepherd and Billings Public High Schools officially opened the season with the Montana Eastern Opener this past Saturday, November 2nd held at Billings Senior High. Thirty-two schools were in attendance, making it a huge event.

The Broadus Speech and Drama team did well for their first meet. Several students performed for their first time. Currently we have five students on our roster. Erick McConnon, returning senior; Megan Johnson, returning junior; Samantha Perry, returning sophomore and we have two new members: Deanna Twedt and Luke McAlpine, both Juniors. It is shaping up to be a stellar year! They have such great, raw talent. We are competing in four different events this year. Erick and Deanna have joined forces to perform a rather comical rendition of William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth entitled “A Bloodless Macbeth”. Samatha Perry is performing a humorous Solo piece called “First Night on the Job”, a monologue by the very funny comedian Bob Newhart. Megan Johnson will be presenting a dramatic oral interpretation of excerpts from the play “Bullied, Bungled, and Botched” a play by D.M. Larson. Closing out our drama team is Luke McAlpine performing an original pantomime entitled “The Thief”.

I am once again excited to be coaching such a great group of students. We will be very busy over the next several months preparing for and performing at meets most ever Saturday. Our next meet is the 2019 Poplar/Wolf Point Speech, Debate, and Drama Tournament to be held at Poplar High School on Saturday, November 9, 2019. If you see these students out and about, make sure to tell them to “break a leg” this season!
