Learn to safely can meat, fruit and vegetables at a canning workshop scheduled for October 12th at the Senior Center in Broadus. The hands-on workshop will take place from noon to 3:00 p.m., and will be taught by Roxie Dinstel, former Extension Educator in both Montana and Alaska.
Apples are plentiful this year so there will be a lesson on water bath canning. Elk meat and chicken will be processed using a pressure canner.
“I like to teach people to can chickens since they are relatively inexpensive and so many people raise chickens,” explained Dinstel, who has over 20 years of experience both as Extension Educator and someone who processed the wild game she and her family harvested in Alaska.
People attending the class can bring their Presto pressure canner gauges in to be tested, a service available free from the MSU Extension-Powder River County Office.
The fee for the class is $10. Contact the Extension Office at 436-2424, to register for the class and for more information.
