May found an unwelcome visitor to the area, in the form of a black bear. It came to the corrals repeatedly, and caused a horse to run through the fence. When it came back it was dispatched, and Fish Wildlife came and dealt with it.
4th of July was celebrated by the Ostendorf, Balsam, Phipps, and Johnson families at the Riverside Park with Helen Orestad. They enjoyed BBQ and watermelon. Mollie Phipps and Lillian Ostendorf represented our area and served watermelon for the Republican Women’s booth, with the proceeds going to the fireworks, which were later that evening.
For supper they all gathered at the Ostendorf house in Miles City and enjoyed supper with Martha and Mike Mintz, Cooper and Maddie. Shane and Heath Balsam stopped by on their way to Billings, where Heath would get on a plane to travel to England to the Kids College at Oxford.
Family and neighbors have all been very busy putting up hay this year between rains. The summer was full of many extreme storms including the phenomenal pouring rains and flash flooding leaving a huge mess in its aftermath.
Tom Ostendorf, Steve Ostendorf, Aaron, Robert and Michael Phipps, and Mike Mintz went on a trip to Northern Washington for some fishing, crabbing, and visiting with the Orestad relatives there.
Konnie Brown Shuey has made some trips back to visit her parents, and explore the area, over the summer.
Robert and Michael Phipps showed their steers at the Eastern Montana Fair, receiving blue carcass awards. Helen Orestad watched them show their animals. She then enjoyed her day with daughter Lillian Ostendorf taking her to see her entries which were on display, and had lunch with the Ostendorf, Phipps families, and Madonna Balsam at the 4-H food booth. She enjoyed her day long trip and visiting with neighbors, and friends.
School has started at Spring Creek School. The teacher is new for this year, but no stranger to the area, as she taught here 10 years ago, for three years. Shawna Williams-Hicks brings back with her a husband BJ, daughter Anna Grace, and her friend Ethan.
Robert and Michael Phipps have returned to school in Miles City where they are both attending Custer County High School this year. Heath Balsam, and Rose Marie Ostendorf as well as the Phalen children have all moved back to town during the week so they can attend classes. Robert is an officer of FFA, and a member of the Cowboys football team.
Mindy Keil was a visitor to the Powderville area over Labor Day weekend. She enjoyed horseback riding, and some ranch projects while she was there.
Fall work has begun. Cooler weather, more rain, and shorter days are here, and everyone is busy gathering cattle, and getting ready for shipping. Neighbors have been helping each other with those tasks.
Happy Anniversary to Lillian and Tom Ostendorf in September!
