"Miles City was a challenging meet," Broadus Head Track Coach Jerry Coulter commented on his team's last regular season meet, during a Monday interview. Broadus attended the Miles City Meet last weekend, where they faced off against tough competition from Class A and B schools.
Standout performances for the Hawks included Kyle Minow's personal records in both the shot put and the javelin, while Kyle also put in a respectable 2:20 time in the 800 meter, in his first time running the event.
Johnny Richards set a personal record in the triple jump, with a 30' 9.5" jump.
Kiarah Coulter placed 6th in the shot put. Kiarah also competed in the Southern Top 10 Meet, earlier in the week. This Invitational Meet put the ten best competitors in each event from the entire southern tier of the state up against one another in competition, meaning Kiarah faced opponents from much larger schools. In the Top 10 Meet, held last Wednesday in Laurel, Kiarah placed 7th in the long jump, beating three Class AA girls, according to Coach Coulter. Kiarah also competed in the shot put.
Broadus looks to improve its performance this Thursday in Baker, during the District Meet. Broadus will compete against other Class C teams for a team trophy – three trophies are awarded. "We hope to be in the hunt in both the boys and girls," Coulter said. Field events are expected to begin around 11 AM.
Last year, the Broadus girls placed 3rd, with two girls on the team. This season, Coulter has four girls out on the team. He also hopes to qualify a Boys relay team, as Bailey Smith is looking to return from injury.
In the meantime, the sour weather has made practice on the track a no-go, so the team is making do by running in town, and in the school.
Coulter spoke of the District Meet: "I'm looking forward to Baker; we hope to perform to our potential."
Divisionals will take place next Thursday, May 16th, in Laurel.
