Editor: I assume you will receive the official obituary directly from the family regarding the passing of D Huckins; here are my personal comments:
I first met D Huckins and his twin brother K in September of 1941 when I entered first grade in Broadus, our shared formative hometown. D and K were in second grade, a year ahead of me but we were in the same classroom because both grades were combined into one classroom under one teacher.
Thus began an unusual lifelong friendship. Unusual in that 1) twins were unique in our community and 2) the Huckins family – and my Williams family – remained in Broadus all the way through our growing-up years of grade school and then to high school graduation a year apart. And we remained friends beyond high school although we went our separate ways. In my case Minnesota then Utah and finally Texas since 1975.
I always enjoyed the practical jokes and friendly banter between these two personable, intelligent brothers. Their banter became arguments at times -- heated but always non-violent. They were twins, yes, but for sure each one a distinct individual.
And each twin had an entertaining sense of humor. One corny joke I remember hearing from D. “Did you know Pat Boone has a brother?” Me: “No, what is his name?” D: “It is ‘Baa'”. (I told you it’s corny!) Quite curious the things you remember.
Goodbye, friend D … my best regards to your family … especially to Sallie who stood by and supported you during your final years of declining health. Also best regards to friend K and his extended family.
And much gratitude to the Broadus community for supporting and home-towning us so effectively.
