Arbor Day Celebrated At Elementary

By Margaret Scoles

Urban Forester, Andrew Miller of Miles City DNRC office, spoke to the Broadus Elementary students about the importance and value of trees on Arbor Day, April 26. He explained the history of Arbor Day. The assembly was launched by the reading of the proclamation by Mayor M. Lyman Amsden. Then one student read their first place poem from each participating class. Fifth grade students created posters which hung around Broadus and promoted Arbor Day. The school developed some impressive displays and bulletin boards emphasizing trees and Arbor Day. Broadus Tree Board members Kelda Page and Margaret Scoles visited each class after lunch and distributed tree cookies.

A highlight of the celebration was the presentation by Mr. Miller of a 20th anniversary Tree City USA flag and awards commemorating 20 years of celebrating Arbor Day in Broadus since 1999, the year that Broadus became a Tree City USA. Anne Amsden, the driving force behind the creation of the Tree Board, accepted the award on behalf of the Board.

Tree Poem

by Zach Jones, 6th grade, 1st place

It is very important as most people know,

That we need trees to live, strive and grow.

Oh you don't know why we need trees ay,

Well then I will show you right now right here today!

One of the reasons we need these trees,

Is because they create the air of which we breathe.

Or maybe you are feeling down today,

Just find a tree have fun and play.

So now you know about these wonderful trees,

We need them so very much don't you agree?
