The Broadus High School Golf team began their season last week in Colstrip, on a course which Head Coach Chad Gatlin described as "the toughest course we will play on outside of State". Gatlin was only able to take four golfers to Colstrip, as many of the team members attended State FFA in Bozeman. With 10 boys on the team, and one girl, Broadus has a substantial group of golfers. Rick Gatlin and Julie Russell return this year as assistant coaches.
An earlier JV tournament at Eagle Rock golf course was canceled due to weather, so the Colstrip tournament was the first chance for Broadus to get out on the links.
Exchange student Guille Castellanos led the Broadus golfers by golfing a 103. A 100 is required to qualify for State, so Guille nearly qualified in his first tournament. Clay LaPlant golfed a 110, Michael Rumph a 121, and Kye Stanley a 138. According to Coach Gatlin, this was Rumph and Stanley's first golf tournament, so their performances at the tough course bode well for the future.
This week a tournament will be held at Forsyth on Wednesday, and Huntley on Thursday, with the team traveling to Eagle Rock next Thursday for the Shepherd Varsity Tournament.
A Golf Tournament here in Broadus is scheduled for April 26th; Chad encouraged the public to come out and support the home team. Changes in MHSA rules this year means that spectators are now able to walk the cart paths, as opposed to the past where they had to essentially stay off the course and watch from afar.
Competing in Golf this year are: Troy Amsden, Joziah Brost, Guille Castellanos, Kortny Cathey, Clay LaPlant, Ronnie Richards, Hunter Robinson, Michael Rumph, Jason Standing Elk, Kye Stanley and Callie Williams.
