Mathcounts students try to calculate a win at State

Four Broadus Junior High Students competed last week at the State Mathcounts competition at Montana Tech in Butte. The Broadus team consisted of 8th graders Marcus Mader, Rheanna Schroeder, Alex Edwards, and Lucinda Cain, along with their coaches - Broadus math teachers Eric Myers and Jeri Dell, made the journey to Butte.

The Top 102 math students in the state competed in the competition, which consisted of a target round, a sprint, and a team test, with the top four competitors moving on to the national Mathcounts competition.

Coach Eric Myers said that the state level tests were quite difficult, and the students were impressed by the level of competition.

Broadus students did not move on to Nationals, but they did not end up at the bottom of the list, either. Rare air indeed, to be amongst the top 100 or so math students in the entire state.

Myers noted that the Mathcounts administrators said that on a nationwide basis, 85% of students who compete in Mathcounts end up in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) careers further down the road.

"I really enjoyed the competition, and learned things I will use to make us better next year," Myers commented. He also said that while he wasn't sure on the year, the last time Broadus had a Mathcounts team participate at the state level was before his time in Broadus; he began teaching here in 2012.
