Hawk wrestlers strut their stuff in Hardin

The Broadus Hawk Wrestlers competed in Hardin over the weekend. Coach Frankie Schoonover took 10 matmen to the meet, which also happened to be the final test for the Hawks before Divisional Tournaments.

"We had a good weekend," Schoonover said of Hardin. "It was an opportunity for us to fine tune our skillset before tournaments, and though the matches are tough, it's not our toughest tournament, which means guys were able to build some confidence. That being said, there's still some really tough kids in Hardin, and kids we'll see down the line at tournaments."

Highlights for the Hawks included Donovan Sturtz, who placed 2nd at 152 pounds, and Troy Amsden, wrestling at 145, who placed 3rd.

Schoonover commented on his team: "Donovan has been wrestling for me for three years. I really saw the light come on for him at this tournament, as he pinned his way through the matches. He really focused and performed well."

In the final match, Michael Weber of Forsyth was able to pin Sturtz, but Sturtz made him work for the win.

"Troy Amsden got over some losses he had at Moorcroft, and peformed well in Hardin," his coach said. Amsden faced Rylin Burns of Colstrip in the semi-final and lost by pin – Amsden is expected to face Burns at Divisionals, according to Schoonover.

In the 3rd place match, Troy beat Dalton Tvedt of Miles City, who happens to be the son of former Broadus teacher Derrick Tvedt.

Other standout performances for the Hawks include Larry Hunt, who made it to the Consolation Semi-Finals. There he faced his old nemesis, Cody Blaede of Colstrip. Early in the match, Hunt hurt his shoulder, and was unfortunately scratched from the competition due to injury.

Josiah Middle Rider, Dakota Holbrook, Ronnie Richards, Brian Hopkins, Luke Herzog, and Corbin Irish also performed admirably in Hardin, with the majority winning at least one match on the weekend.

Schoonover said that his wrestlers are progressing as individuals and as a team, and will spend the week preparing for the Divisional Tournament in Forsyth. The team will have a pep rally prior to their departure, this Friday at 10:30 AM at the High School. The community is encouraged to attend the event.
