Girls Basketball wins 2, Boys 1-2 on week

Girls

The Lady Hawks won a pair of games last week, first against Terry on Friday, then at home against Plevna, on Saturday.

"We played well against Terry, and were really able to push the ball down the floor," Broadus Head Coach Kacey Stanley commented. "We were able to play our starters for the first two quarters, then get our younger girls some additional playing time." Broadus jumped out to an early lead, and kept a comfortable lead throughout the game, winning 43-11.

During the game, nearly the entire Broadus team was able to score, while Coach Stanley was able to work on some different defensive strategies.

Kiarah Coulter turned in an impressive performance, with 20 points and 11 steals, in only 19 minutes of playing time on the game. Lacey Robinson had 6 points and 4 rebounds on the game.

Coming off the road win, the Lady Hawks returned home to face Plevna, whom they had previously beat at Plevna. Broadus jumped to an early lead, winning the game easily, 51-28.

Kiarah Coulter once again orchestrated a dominant performance, scoring 32 points on the night, which was the highest number of points scored by a High School athlete in Montana over the weekend. Coulter's 32 points against Terry falls close to the school's single game scoring record for girls. Interestingly enough, according to Coach Stanley, the record is held by Kiarah's mother, Kristie Coulter, with 36 points.

The Lady Hawks will now face a tough St. Labre team on Friday – the Class B St. Labre team is ranked 6th in the State. Broadus then hosts Northern Cheyenne on Saturday.

In their last game, Broadus lost in a very close game to Busby; Stanley hopes to reverse their fortunes this time around. "We've been improving throughout the season, and plan on keeping up the tempo against NCTS's defense."

Boys

The Broadus Hawk Boys basketball team played in three games over the last week, hosting Jordan last Tuesday, then traveling to Terry on Saturday and Ekalaka this Tuesday. Due to our print scheduling, we won't have full stats on the Ekalaka game until next week.

In the Jordan game, the Mustangs got out to an early lead over the Hawks, 14-5 after the 1st quarter. In the second quarter, the Hawks made a 14-4 run, closing the gap to 34-26 at the half. In the fourth quarter, the Hawks were able to cut the score to within 3 points of the lead, but some costly turnovers sealed their fate; Jordan would then sink their freethrows after fouls late in the game, to pull ahead in the end. Final score: Jordan 71, Broadus 58.

Standout performances for Broadus included Tayden Gee, who came alive with 21 points, and sank 7 out of 8 free throws, as well as adding 6 rebounds and an assist.

Marcus Mader scored 13 points, going 3 out of 3 from the free throw line, with an additional 3 rebounds, a steal, and 6 assists.

"The turnovers really hurt us," Coach Mike Richards said of the Jordan game. "We had 11 turnovers in the first quarter, which put us behind and we just couldn't quite get back into it." The stats don't lie, with Jordan connecting on 26 points off of turnovers in the game, compared to the Hawks' 5 points off turnovers.

The Hawks then traveled to Terry on Friday, where they hoped to pick up a relatively easy road win. The Hawks took a lead in the first quarter, going up 20-11, and kept a similar lead throughout the game, as Coach Richards had the team working on some different plays that might come in handy down the road.

The Hawks won the game 56-46, giving Broadus another important conference win.

Kashus Giacometto led the Hawks with 15 points and 7 rebounds, while young players performed well against Terry; Johnny Richards had 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals while going 5 of 9 from the field and sinking a pair of 3 pointers. Marcus Mader had another solid performance, finishing with 11 points, 5 assists, and 5 steals.

On Tuesday, the Hawks traveled to Ekalaka, where the Hawks lost 41-58. Johnny Richards led the Hawks with 13 points, 9 of which came via a trio of 3 pointers.

This loss put Broadus with a 3-6 record. Melstone leads the conference at 9-0, with a jumble of teams below, then Broadus in 5th place. Custer/Hysham and Terry both share 2 wins, and Northern Cheyenne rounds out the conference at 1-9.

Broadus will face Northern Cheyenne this Saturday, here in Broadus, with another home game on Friday night against St. Labre.

Games begin on Friday against Labre at 3:00 PM, with four games on the schedule. On Saturday, only Varsity games will be played, with the Girls starting at 4:00 PM.
