Junior High Boys Bball takes home 1st place trophy

The Broadus Boys Junior High Basketball team had a great regular season, finishing 9-1 in conference play, with their only loss to Melstone. That loss would prove to be both prophetic and a motivator for the young athletes, as they headed into the end of season district tournament, held last Friday and Saturday in Miles City.

Broadus went into the tournament seeded 2nd, but some last minute changes affected the tournament format due to both Jordan and Wibaux playing in the HS state championship 6 man football game, which meant the junior high players went to watch their schools instead of playing in the tournament (Wibaux won 70-27).

This meant that Broadus had a shorter path to victory, but they first had to do their duty on the court. In the first game on Friday afternoon, Broadus handled Ekalaka easily, 63-35.

This win put Broadus up against their rival, Melstone. "It was a battle," Broadus Coach Mike Richards said of the matchup.

Melstone was able to squeak ahead 49-46. Richards said his team made some adjustments to their defense, which helped to keep the game close.

In the third game of the tournament, Broadus once again played Ekalaka, though the Carter County Bulldogs played a much tougher game. Broadus was still able to win, 59-49, which once again placed the Hawks up against Melstone, in the championship game.

This game, played at around 8 pm Saturday, was a battle through all four quarters. Broadus led 16-13, but in the second neither team could put together much offense, and the Hawks went into the locker rooms for half time still ahead 20-17. Richards said Melstone made some adjustments in the third quarter and came back, with the score 31-29 going into the fourth. In the final quarter, the Hawks perimeter game really came alive with Broadus winning 50-35, and winning the conference trophy.

Stats were not made available for the Boys Tournament.
