The possibility of forming an artisan’s society in the Broadus area has come one step closer to reality. Several interested persons recently met to discuss their ideas and visions for such a group. Although an official name or mission statement were not yet chosen, the general consensus of the gathering was to focus on sharing resources and encouragement, sponsoring educational opportunities, and promoting our artists and their work. This group will be inclusive of not only visual artists and photographers, but skilled craftsman such as jewelry, knife or furniture makers, gourd artists, metal sculptors, etc.
Many excellent ideas for the future of this society were discussed, with the first goal being to host an art show during the upcoming centennial celebration in July of 2019. The show will be open to all Powder River County alumni, as well as current area residents. Other suggestions were hosting workshops to learn or hone new mediums or techniques, sharing of resources by local artists such as help in setting up a website, learning how to enter regional or national art shows, tips on how to get a gallery showing and demonstrations on technique. Monthly get togethers where members bring their projects to work on would be good incentive for creativity and an opportunity for critique. Eventually, finding a space to rent for a permanent buy revolving display of the members work is another possibility.
A second meeting will be held in January to choose a name and formal mission statement for the society, elect officers, and form a committee to head up the July art show. All interested persons are encouraged to contact Lana Smith (436-2560) or Laura Lee Ullrich (436-2214) to be sure they receive notification of the next meeting.
