The senior English class is in the process of completing a variety of activities related to career planning. In this unit students have explored the MTCIS Career Planning Program on the internet in order to research career options that suit their interests and talents. As a follow-up to these activities, students practiced their telephone skills by arranging their own job shadow experiences primarily in the Billings area. Even though Mrs. Williams teaches the main areas of the unit, Mrs. Phillips, guidance counselor at PRCDHS, is key in guiding students in this process.
On November 7, members of the senior class traveled to their job shadow sites which were as follows: Dalton Wahl, Brooke Burley, and Kylee Drane-- police officers at the Billings Police Department, Hannah Rasmussen and Kye Stanley-- MT GOP Office, Alessandro Galieni-- radiologists at St. Vincent Hospital, Keelyn Murdoch-- accountants at Eide Bailly, Maclain Cathey--civil engineers at Great West Engineering, Mason and Larry Hunt-- helicopter mechanics at Billings Flying Service, Tate Harmon-- veterinarian/equine massage therapy at Lund Equine, Troy Amsden-- electricians at Mountain Electric, Clay LaPlant-- various departments at Billings UPS, Donovan Sturtz-- computer programming at Computers Unlimited, Kashus Giacometto-- shop mechanics at Billings Farmhand, and Kiarah Coulter--athletic trainers with AMP Services at MSUB. Meanwhile Thomas Drane and Hunter Robinson shadowed our local game warden, Kyle Queer.
As part of the job shadow portion of the career unit, students wrote confirmation and thank you letters to their hosts. Currently they are in the process of creating a 3-5 minute presentation relating what they observed and learned at their job shadow sites as well as stating whether the job they shadowed seemed like a good fit for them.
Besides career exploration other topics such as filling out job applications, creating a resume and cover letter, learning the do’s and don’ts with regard to the interview process, practicing an interview, and exploring the cost of living expenses and financing for the future are being covered in the career unit. Informational handouts and assignments completed during this unit will be placed in plastic sleeves and compiled inside 3-ring binders. The information in these binders will provide valuable resources for students as they continue to set goals and plan for their futures in the real world.
