The Powder River Trails club organized a pop-up demonstration project in downtown Broadus last week. The project included curb extensions and crosswalks designed to calm traffic and make crossing streets safer and more accessible for all ages and abilities. Hay bales were also decorated to celebrate Broadus Hawks' Homecoming and decorate the curb extensions.
Community feedback is important to the project. Paper surveys are available at downtown businesses and the online survey is available msuextension.org/powderriver. Comments so far have included: "Leave the streets as they are;" "It looks fabulous;" and, "It helps knowing where to park my car when I go to the post office."
The temporary curb extensions and decorated hay bales will stay up through October 8th.
Cass Zimmer, Raymond Ragsdale and Donna Wilson have all been tremendous help in demonstrating what curb extensions, cross walks and wheelchair accessible ramps might look like. A couple of the most important things we've learned is that we all are very proud of our community, and there are many places downtown where sidewalks need improved.
Ten businesses and organizations decorated bales for the hay bale decorating contest to celebrate homecoming. "Angry Birds" by Gatlin Construction, Barbero Auto and Ag, Powder River Petals and 1st Bank received first place and a one hundred dollar first place prize donated by Pumps Etc.; "Monopoly" by Lisa Gaskill and Lisa Lynch received second; "USPS" by the United States Postal Service employees received third. Thank you to Craig and Jackee Randall for donating the hay bales and to Warren Wash for delivering them.
"The hay bale decorating contest was such a great addition to the homecoming festivities. I heard so many positive comments," explained Amy Minow, downtown business owner.
The people's choice contest is still underway. Voting can take place either online when completing the community feedback, or by placing your written vote in the community feedback containers at downtown businesses. Powder River Trails is sponsoring the People's Choice fifty dollar cash award. Other contestants include "BHS" by Powder River Manor; "Pac Man" by Broadus IGA employees; "Green Pac Man" by CornerStore employees; "Gumball Machine" by Copps True Value Employees; "Hawk Nest" by St. Vincent's and Henry Malley Memorial Library; "Go Hawks" by Biddle Busy Beavers and "Old Time Games" by Senior Citizens Center. People's Choice Voting concludes on Tuesday, October 9th, at 9:00 a.m.
