The Powder River Sheriff’s Department has had reports about a variety of scams affecting locals. One scam involves a caller telling people they have a warrant out for their arrest, and sending a certain amount of money will remedy the situation and keep them out of jail.
Another scam, which has affected local businesses, involves an email scam which claims to be a customer who had their credit card overcharged, and wants the business owner to refund their money (and thus gain access to even more money).
Sheriff Drane emphasized that unless the person in question is someone you’ve been doing business with, the call or email is likely a fraud. With the warrant scam, Drane said that unless their office is the one calling, the call is likely a scam. He also said to call the Sheriff’s Office if you’re questioning the issue, and whatever you do, don’t send them any money.
The above listed scams are in addition to the myriad variety of robo-calls and live callers looking for money, which community members receive both on cell phones and land lines. With election season in full swing, the politicians are also harassing people at all hours.
An unfortunate side effect of all these spam calls and people looking for money or votes, whether legal or illegal, is that one of the greatest technological achievements in history – the telephone, is being turned in to more of an annoyance than a useful tool.
Sheriff Drane also noted that his department had performed alcohol compliance tests on establishments in the county, and five of the seven establishments tested passed their inspections.
