Broadus VFD responds to fires in September The Broadus Volunteer Fire Department responded to several fires over the past week. On September 5th, 3 trucks responded to and helped douse a 5 acre fire at Gnerers on Crow Creek. The cause of the fire was reported as an ATV backfire. On September 7, two Broadus units responded to a large lightning caused fire at Ostendorfs, approximately 42 miles Southeast of Miles City. The blaze consumed 360 acres. A hay stack fire sent three trucks to Wilson’s, south of Broadus, on September 9th. The fire was blamed on self-combustion, and several hundred bales were lost in the inferno.
On September 10th, a coal seam fire in the Moorhead area burned 75 acres.
Though this year has been relatively quiet for fires, Volunteer Carey Trumps mentioned that the recent batch of fires in September means folks should not let their guards down. There’s plenty of grass to burn, and with the warm conditions and lack of precipitation in the forecast, that threat is not likely to go away anytime soon.
