Cross Country team runs in historic first meet for Broadus

Three Broadus girls traveled to Billings last Friday, making school history, as the first ever cross-country team to run for Broadus High School! Not only was this the first meet for the school and of the season, it was also the biggest meet they will see all year. Over 30 teams from across Montana and Wyoming, from AA-C competed in the race, with roughly 160 competitors in the girls' varsity division. Seeing roughly 800 athletes in all, this was an amazing experience for the new team.

Abbie Heacock, Lea Aye, and Rachel Rasmussen are the three athletes who make up the team. Abbie was not able to run in Billings due to a hip injury, but you will be seeing her back in action in no time. Lea and Rachel both had phenomenal races, qualifying for the State Cross Country meet in Missoula at the end of October. With the adrenaline and first meet jitters, the race started out a bit fast, but the two girls were able to adjust and settle back into their race pace and finish just seconds away from each other. Lea came across the line of the 3.2 mile race, with a time of 25:09, and Rachel finished with a time of 25:14.

This week the team will travel to Crow Agency on Friday to take on a course that is talked about by all cross-country runners around this area. A steep hill on the course is known to make athletes walk, or sometimes even crawl to reach the top! The Broadus girls are prepared and ready for the challenge this course presents! Wish them luck!
