District Court Roundup

Documents filed in District Court have revealed a number of ongoing cases, falling under the Honorable Michael Hayworth’s jurisdiction as District Court Judge.

According to court documents, Kaycee Kolka of Broadus was arrested on charges of endangering the welfare of a child, stemming from an ongoing incident which occurred between October 13, 2017, and November 22, 2017, at 808 Drane Lane in Broadus.

During this period, the charges state that Kolka knowingly caused or permitted her one year old child to become exposed to methamphetamine.

A hair test of the child on January 9th confirmed that the child had been exposed to meth. Kolka was arrested and released on bail, and subsequently violated the conditions of release after consuming alcohol, and testing positive for methamphetamine during a urine test earlier this month.

A jury trial is set for October 4th; the felony charges carry up to a five-year jail sentence.

Joshua Brown was arrested on four charges due to an incident which took place May 26th, at 215 North Lincoln in Broadus. Brown is charged with strangulation of a partner or family member, a felony, from “knowingly impeding normal breathing” of his partner.

Brown is also charged with several misdemeanors, including partner or family member assault, from causing bruising, cuts, and scratches to the head and neck region of his partner during the incident. Another charge is criminal mischief, from pushing a window air conditioner out onto the ground and damaging the unit. A fourth charge has also been issued of obstructing a police officer, after Brown impeded Broadus Deputy Blaine Perry.

Brown is currently out on bail in Miles City; an Omnibus Hearing is set for August 1.

Bram Schaffer has been charged in District Court with a 4th DUI, stemming from an incident on April 13th, where Schaffer was caught speeding near Cottonwood Park by Montana Highway Patrolman Matthew Zellers. An August 1 Omnibus Hearing is set for this case.

Trenton Schaffer has been charged with Assault with a Weapon, after a barfight broke out at the Big Sky earlier this year. Trenton also has an August 1 Omnibus Hearing.

Adam Hansen of Broadus has been charged with parole violations on a previous DUI case, when a parole officer and local deputies conducted a search on his residence on May 8th, and found a 22 rifle and marijuana. Original reporting on the case noted that Cory Hopkins had also been found with marijuana, as he was living at the residence and had conditions of release from a bad check charge which precluded him from engaging in such activity. District Court documents show that Hansen was in possession of the substance.
