Thirty-six people, two babies in strollers, two dogs and one bicyclist ran or walked the Freedom Run held in Broadus on a cool 4th of July morning. The 27th annual event was won by Joan Jilka. Jilka won the 5-mile race with a time of 42:32, and received an award sponsored by Powder River Vet Clinic. Tom Herzog was second overall with a 43:32 minute run. He received an award sponsored by J&S Tire & Repair. Kyle Minow won the 1-mile race with a time of 6:29; Jarret Blain came in second at 7:32, and Kiarah Coulter was third with an 8:02 time.
Other participants in the 1-mile race/walk included Trace, Quincy, Patrick, Maci, Reece and Ashley Emmons, Kayleigh Opstedahl, Libby Nisley, Terryn and Tenley Yonkee, Scarlett, Twila and Shanna Talcott, Carolyn Sturdevant, Heather Desatoff, Julie Riley, Molly Lloyd, Dora Huckins, Katie Ward, Kathy Roberts, Pam Elliot and Margaret Scoles. Additional 5-Mile Run and walk participants included Mark Long (51:08), Amanda Riter (52:06), Jordan Smith (58:33), Karen Huckins, Rosalee Kinzer, Nancy Kane, Karen Amende and Phoebe Amsden.
Volunteers for the event included: Tom Brewer marked the trail; Jerry Coulter started and timed the races; Raymond Ragsdale and Dan McDowell, Broadus Volunteer Fire Department, controlled traffic; and, Vanna Byrd and Molly Lloyd registered participants. Additional volunteers included Karen Amende, Katie Ward, Alyson Ragsdale, Nick Knoblauch and Kelda Page.
The Powder River Trails club organized the Freedom Run this year. Proceeds from the Freedom Run will build a fitness trail system behind the B-Hill. Sponsors for the fitness trail to-date include the School Community Development Council and Cans for Kids.
