1988 Fair Book dedicated to Emmons

A picnic in the park Saturday night honored Charley and Doris Jean Emmons as recipients of the 1988 Fair Book Dedication.

Nominated by the Sam Russiff family, the Emmons were congratulated by numerous friends and relatives at the surprise celebration. Fair books are available at the Extension Office.

The dedication was as follows:

“Charley is the son of Carl and Freida Emmons. He has been on the family ranch most of his life. Doris Jean is the daughter of Frank and Frances Rice. She was raised in Broadus and on their ranch on the Powder River.

Charley and Doris Jean were married in June of 1946 and have lived on the home ranch ever since. They raised five children, Jerry of Stephenville, Texas, Tom of Volborg, Peggy of Billings, Barry of Olive, and Julie of Raleigh, North Carolina.

Both Charley and Doris Jean were 4-H leaders, Charley for 10 years and Doris Jean for 4 years. Charley was also a Fair Board member for 5 years, during that time he was instrumental in getting the Multi-Purpose Building built.

Charley and Doris Jean have hosted many judgings and provided livestock judgings. They have also provided 4-H’ers with steers or heifers for 4-H projects. Charley worked to keep the carcass show going, so 4-H’ers and their parents could learn why they were raising 4-H steers and what the end project looked like. They also have supported the County Fair in any way they could.

Charley and Doris Jean have also been active in other areas of the community, with Doris Jean being on the Nursing Home Committee since its beginning. Charley has been on the local SCS Board, a member and past president of the Montana Seed Growers, served six years on the Montana Simmental Association Board and six years on the American Simmental Association Board.

Although they no longer have any of their own children in 4-H, Charley and Doris Jean are still there to help their grandchildren and any other 4-H’ers.”

Graduates gather for 50-year class reunion

Members of the Broadus High School graduating class of 1938 gathered here for a 50-year reunion on July 2.

Activities included a dinner at the Homestead Inn, where classmates enjoyed renewing acquaintances, reminiscing, and visiting.

There were originally seventeen in the class of 1938. Six are now deceased and five members could not attend. Several members of the classes of 1937 and 1939 also joined the group.

Graduates present included Ruth (Heidel) Clark, Albert “Bud” Clark of Billings and Nell (Smith) Popp, Babe (Nehlich) Sandall and Virginia (Rumph) Robinson of Broadus. Also on hand were John Popp, Mrs. Lee Smith, Jim & Iris Neiman, Floyd and Elsie (Pierce) Stallsworth of Salida, CO, Mrs. Lucille Bidwell and Mr. and Mrs. John Giacometto.

Many attend 30-year class reunion

Preparations and invitations for the reunion on July 2 of the combined Broadus high school graduating classes of 1957, 1958 and 1959 began last fall when according to Ila Dee Talcott who, with Thelma Taylor, formed the committee to host the 1957 class.

Members hosting the celebrations from the other two classes were Marianne Hyatt, Phyllis Bryan, Betty Aye, Louise Alderman and Kay Plummer of Belle Creek.

Mrs. Talcott said, “We all met together when we could, and otherwise made arrangements by phone, mailing two letters to each member of the classes. Kay Plummer ordered supplies for decorating and name tags and so on from her school teachers catalogs, which was a big help.”

“Everyone pitched in on decorations and cleanup, and I do think that in no spot but Broadus could on have a banquet and a dance, plus prizes, decorations and incidentals at a cost of $10 per graduate.

The decorations were red, white and blue and there were also quite a number of pictures and other memorabilia of high school days of the three classes. Steve Holt served as MC at the Banquet, which was served by the ladies of the VFW Auxiliary.

The classes first met at the golf course club house for general greetings and some recognition of long-ago classmates.

The three classes were among seven Broadus High School classes gathering here on July 2. The classes of 1938, 1957, ’58 and ’59, 1963, 1968 and 1978 all met together at a VFW Hall dance that evening following separate functions.
