The Powder River County Noxious Weed program has a new Weed Coordinator, Tom Pino, who is available to sell herbicides to landowners on Tuesday mornings from 8:00 to noon; on-call all day Saturday, and at other times of the week by arrangement. Pino can be reached at 436-2405 (office) or 406-935-8565 (cell). Pino has been involved with the Powder River Noxious Weed program for six years. His focus, and that of the Powder River County Weed District Board is the control of noxious weeds. If a land owner has concerns about spot spraying noxious weeds on their land or on the right-of-way advanced to their land, please contact Pino. If you are concerned about infestations in specific areas, please communicate that concern with either Pino or contact Extension Agent Mary Rumph.
"No one knows what problems exist better than landowners, so please share your concerns," said Rumph. "Especially on a year like this, some of those noxious weeds are camouflaged with cover. I cannot overstress the importance of controlling small "satellite" infestations before they become multi-acre monocultures. For the county to have a successful noxious weed control program, all landowners need to be involved," she added.
The Weed Board would like to support landowners in the battle against noxious weeds. Providing twelve different herbicides at 10% over cost is one benefit; short term use of sprayers is another benefit. Members of the Weed Board include Tim Fortner, Bob Janssen, Phil VerWolf, Jerry Wilson and John Barbero.
