With the winter season of high school sports competitions kicking off this weekend, we spoke with the head coaches to see what lies ahead for the boys and girls basketball and wrestling teams. The basketball teams will begin their seasons this Friday in Miles City at the Shamrock Classic, a tournament at Sacred Heart School featuring varsity and JV teams from Broadus, Circle, Jordan, and Savage, as well as JV teams from Ekalaka. Times for those games are listed in the community calendar. Broadus Boys Coach Mike Richards encourages fans to...
The Broadus volleyball players pictured made the 2C All Conference Volleyball Team this season. Pictured left to right are Zeason Schaffer, 1st team, Abi Krantz, 2nd team, Aspen Krantz, 2nd team, and Lauryn Billing, 1st team. In addition, Zeason Schaffer made the All State team, one of four players from the 2C conference to make the team....
The Broadus Lady Hawk Volleyball team competed at the Eastern C Divisional Tournament last week in Sidney. Broadus first faced off against North Country, which is a co-op athletic program between Saco, Whitewater, and Hinsdale on the Hi-Line. On paper North Country looked tall in comparison to Broadus, but in viewing past game film Broadus Coach Gordon Archer thought North Country was beatable. "There's nothing they did that made us think we wouldn't be able to beat them, but some parts of our...

Holbrook was also named Second Team All Conference on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball as a lineman. The All-Star game is expected to take place in early June of 2022....

At high noon last Thursday, tournament volleyball action commenced for the Broadus Lady Hawks. The Broadus team found themselves seeded third entering the 2C District Tournament, played last Thursday and Friday in Glendive, as they faced Terry in the first match. Terry had lost in straight sets to Broadus in both of their regular season meetings, and went into the tournament seeded sixth, with a 3-9 record. The Lady Hawks went into the tourney with a 12-3 record, and began the tournament much...
The Lady Hawk Cross Country team made the long drive across Montana to the State Cross Country Meet in Missoula last week, with the race taking place on Saturday. Cross Country Coach Ashley Emmons told us the weather was perfect for the race, in a strong contrast to some years when snow and cold made for difficult running conditions. This year, the air had a bit of a chill in the morning but turned out perfect for the three-racer Broadus contingent, consisting of Senior Lady Hawk Rachel...
By Joe Kusek For the Examiner When Joey Williams was in junior high school, she wrote an essay for class on why the National Finals Rodeo should have breakaway roping. It took a little more than a decade but Williams finally got her wish. For the first time in Las Vegas, the NFR will include breakaway roping competition. Like the other events, only the top 15 in the 2021 WPRA world standings qualify. The inaugural NFBR was in 2020 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. The 2021 NFBR will be...
The Broadus Lady Hawks finished off their regular season with a pair of wins last week, traveling to Savage on Thursday, and facing Wibaux at home on Friday. "We played good volleyball at Savage," Broadus Head Coach Gordon Archer commented on the easy win. "They [Savage] struggled with our serving, especially from Zeason Schaffer, who had 11 aces." The Broadus attack made short work of Savage, winning in three straight sets, 25-12, 25-21, and 25-21. Savage was ranked 7th in the 1C District, out...
"I don't have enough adjectives to describe how well the match went," Broadus Head Coach Gordon Archer beamed as he described the Lady Hawk Volleyball win over Circle. The match took place last Friday in Broadus, with the Lady Hawks winning in four sets over the Lady Wildcats. Prior to that match, Circle had won all twelve regular game matches in which they had played this season. The first two games on Friday were won fairly handily by Broadus, 25-20 and 25-19, but Circle came back in the...
The Broadus Hawks football team played a cross-conference game against Ekalaka on Saturday, with the Bulldogs coming out on top, 56-26. The conditions were pleasant for the game, though the field was a bit wet at game time following the mid-week snowstorm, after which the field had been cleared. Ekalaka led off the game with a QB keeper for a touchdown, and Broadus failed to match the Bulldog's intensity as Ekalaka kept the lead throughout the game while the Hawk offense faltered. A combination...
By Broadus Cross Country Coach Ashley Emmons Our last meet of the regular season was in Joliet. The weather was about perfect running weather; it was a little windy but besides that, beautiful! The Joliet course is a little strange as the course runs through a couple streets throughout the town, but that definitely did not seem to bother any of the runners! Rachel Rasmussen broke her school record, again, with a huge personal best time of 22:02. This beat her previous best time by 26 seconds! Rebecca Rasmussen also had a personal best time in...
The Lady Hawk Cross Country team competed at several events over the last few weeks, including Lockwood, Miles City, and Colstrip. Broadus XC Coach Ashley Emmons commented on the race at Lockwood on September 25th: "Lockwood was the most brutal course we've ran. It was a four lap course and two of the laps had a hill that even the varsity boys had to walk up bent over pushing on their knees. To make it even more challenging it was 91° when the girls ran! Even though it was such a hot day and har...
The Lady Hawks hosted St. Labre on Tuesday, October 5th, with the Lady Hawks handily beating the Class B Lady Braves in three straight sets, 25-4, 25-11, and 25-12. The match allowed Broadus Head Coach Gordon Archer a chance to play some of his younger players, as he has done in other matches this year when Broadus had a fair lead. That move would prove prescient as several of those younger players would step up to play in a high pressure match on Saturday, as Broadus traveled to the Ekalaka...
The Hawk football team hosted Fairview last Friday evening, in a game which started out with cool weather, and eventually spat a few rain drops before eventually coming to an end after the third quarter, when the game was called due to lightning in the area. Fairview came out hot early in the game, scoring on the second play of the game on a draw play, then picking off a pass on the ensuing Broadus drive to go up by two touchdowns early in the first quarter. From there, Fairview steadily scored...
Hawk Football traveled to Lodge Grass last Friday to take on the Indians. Broadus scored quickly, on a one yard run from Johnny Richards, followed by a fumble recovery and return for a touchdown by Corbin Irish to put the Hawks up 13-0. Penalties plagued both sides throughout the game, particularly holding penalties in the first half on the Hawks. Broadus was still able to lead going into the half, 13-6, and in the second half the penalty calls seemed to subside, particularly as Broadus pulled...
The Lady Hawk Volleyball team went on the road last weekend, defeating Terry and Ekalaka in three straight sets per match. Speaking of the Terry and Ekalaka matches, Broadus Head Coach Gordon Archer said: "We had a pretty good weekend of volleyball. The girls played strong and relaxed, and against Terry we hit and passed the best we have all year, though maybe we got a little too relaxed when it came to serving, and dropped a few we shouldn't have." The Lady Hawks beat the Lady Terriers 25-16, 2...
The Lady Hawk varsity squad faced off against Ekalaka last Thursday during Homecoming. A large cheering section of students were on hand for the match, as was a large contingent of hometown and visiting fans. Broadus Head Coach Gordon Archer spoke about the match: "Our girls came out ready to play. It seemed like everything Ekalaka threw at us we had an answer for, and the cheering fans really helped our girls out for the win." Broadus easily won the first two sets 25-17, 25-15, with the third...
A cheerful fandom filled the stands to watch their Broadus Hawk football team take on Poplar, last Friday in Broadus. The weather was mild at game time, with just a hint of chill in the air as darkness fell across the land. The freeze earlier in September had subdued the bugs, making for an all-around pleasant experience for fans, players, and coaching staff alike. The Poplar Indians had yet to win a game this year, and Broadus was hungry to demonstrate their prowess on the gridiron, leading to...
The Lady Hawk Cross Country team competed in two runs last week, at the home meet Tuesday, and at Circle against other Class C competitors on Friday. The aptly named Rolling Hills Golf Course proved to be a tough competition for runners due to the number and length of the hills. The runners looped up and down over some of the steeper portions of the course familiar to golfers, beginning on hole 1, looping around hole 2 and back up around the far end of the course. Varsity runners would run the l...
The Lady Hawk Varsity Volleyball squad hosted Terry last Friday, with Broadus Head Coach Gordon Archer commenting: "The girls came out and dominated from the beginning against Terry. They just didn't seem to have an answer for us, and we did well in every aspect of the match." The Lady Hawks won handily in three straight sets, 25-9, 25-10, and 25-9. On Saturday, Broadus made the trip to Circle. The Lady Wildcats were thus far undefeated this season, and thought they could handle Broadus easily,...
Broadus Hawk Football traveled to Circle last Saturday, playing Circle at their homecoming. "It was a physical game," Broadus Head Coach Ross Randall commented on the Hawk performance. The grinding, tough game featured a number of penalties, as well as several illegal chop blocks which went uncalled, according to sources at the game and video footage; these no calls led to Randall becoming extremely aggravated and ultimately being ejected from the game. Broadus led 8-0 after the first quarter...
The Broadus High School Rodeo featured participants from around the region, and was held on September 10-12th. Local Rodeor Chalee Harms currently sits second in the state in the girls all-around. Here are the results from the rodeo; those participants who competed but did not score are not shown. Broadus CC/RCH #1 - 9/10/21 Boys Cutting: Ryatt Fraser, Hysham, 72.50; Kasey Forum, Nashua, 71.00; Colton Turbiville, Rhame, ND, 66.00. Cowhorse: Chalee Harms, Miles City, 145.50; Mesa Radue, Belgrade, 144.50; Mollie Mae Ruth, Big Timber, 138.00; Colt...
Last Thurday, the Broadus Lady Hawk Cross Country team traveled to the beautiful fork, or Belle Fourche, as French explorers named the confluence of the Belle Fourche and Redwater Rivers in present day South Dakota. The Belle Fourche XC Invite was run on the golf course in Belle Fourche, a run which Broadus Cross Country Coach Ashley Emmons told us was one of the tougher races of the year, due to the number of hills involved. Times turned in by the athletes showed the difficult nature of the...
The Broadus Hawk Varsity Football team made the long trip to Grenora, North Dakota to face Mon-Dak, the cross border Westby/Grenora co-op team, last Friday. The game would prove to be a slug-fest, with Broadus’ strong defense providing a strong bulwark against Mon-Dak’s offense, while on the other side of the ball, the Hawks would struggle to score. Broadus held Mon-Dak to 11 total yards and no first downs in the first half, effectively shutting down their offense. In the first half, Bro...
