Joey Williams of Volborg recently won the breakaway roping event at Ellensburg, Washington, bringing home over $7,000 in winnings, setting the arena record during her runs. The Ellensburg Rodeo has been held every Labor Day weekend since 1922. Williams is currently ranked number eight in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association World Standings in breakaway roping. The Lady Hawk Cross Country team took on a hail storm at the meet in Billings, and last week went on to face heat and the dreaded Gas Cap Hill at the Hardin Invitational, last Friday. Gas Cap Hill is a notoriously long, tough climb for the racers, and this year the hot conditions prompted race coordinators to have a person at the top of the climb spraying the racers down with water to cool them off as they summited the hill. The Lady Hawk Volleyball team went into their second weekend of volleyball matches coming off a first place win at the Fairview Tournament, and looked to carry that momentum onward as they traveled to Circle on Friday and Terry on Saturday. The Hawk Football team traveled to Lavina last week to play Belt in a non-conference game. Broadus Head Coach Wyatt Williams told us conditions were hot for the game. Two of the last local golf tournaments of the summer season took place over the past couple weekends. "The Tournament", held August 27th and 28th featured 32 teams, with two golfers per team over the two day tournament. Gye Varner and Doug Mraz placed second on Saturday and fifth on Sunday, winning the overall tournament. Calvin Monger and Kyle Ostman placed second, with Quentin and Kade Rumph winning third overall. The Broadus Hawk Varsity football team notched their first win of the season on Friday against a tough Ekalaka Bulldog squad while playing in Ekalaka. The win marks the first game as head coach for Wyatt Williams, who takes over this year after a stint as assistant coach in years past. Forty teams were on hand for the Lady Hawk Cross Country Team’s first competition of the year at the Billings Invite, held Friday, August 26th in Billings. The Powder River Working Horse Show took place last Saturday as the capstone event for the fair. Competitors vied for a custom saddle along with top honors by utilizing their riding skills, as well as their horse's training and ability to try and best the local competition in several categories including confirmation, cutting, heading, heeling, boxing, fence work, and a trail class. On Sunday, August 7th a golf tournament was held at Rolling Hills Golf Course for the junior golfers of the community. 9 young wrestlers in grades K-12 attended the Zadick Wrestling Clinic in Broadus last week. Olympic Wrestler and World Championship Silver Medalist Mike Zadick from Great Falls coached the event, which featured youth wrestlers from Broadus as well as other areas. Two former Broadus rodeo athletes, Garrett Cunningham and Tate Harmon, as well as Bo Vocu of Ashland competed at the College National Finals Rodeo, held last week in Casper, Wyoming. All three of the young athletes are saddle bronc riders, having previously qualified for the National Finals by placing in their respective regions. Cunningham attends school at MSU-Northern in Havre as a Freshman. Garrett was the Big Sky Region Champion Saddle Bronc rider, going into the National Finals Rodeo. An astounding 120 contestants ages 2 to 12 years old competed in the 2022 Broadus Little Levi, held last weekend at the fairgrounds. The weather late Sunday afternoon took on a stormy look as the events transpired, and just as the last steer rider made their ride the rain commenced; the awards ceremony was moved inside but the competition was completed with good timing. Houston Brown, 2017 Broadus Grad, won the Match Bronc Ride on May 22nd at the world famous Bucking Horse Sale in Miles City. Brown, age 23, won $9,375 in the event, which featured 40 of the top saddle bronc riders from around the world, including 22 of the 25 top ranked riders.
