A pair of Hawks wrestlers marched in the 2023 All Class State Wrestling Tournament "parade of athletes", as teams from across the Big Sky State entered MetraPark in Billings last Friday. The Lady Hawks played some of their finest basketball of the year over the weekend, as they sealed up a second place conference placing with a win against Wibaux on Friday, and played a strong game against Ekalaka on Saturday. The Broadus Boys basketball sealed up their 4C conference championship with wins against Wibaux and Ekalaka over the weekend, making 2023 the 11th time Broadus has won their conference in the team's history, and only the fifth time to do so with an undefeated conference record. A nearly two week hiatus from the competitive basketball court provided a challenge for the Hawk boys team, as they descended upon the Jordan Mustangs last Friday, then traveling to Melstone on Saturday. Icy road conditions over the weekend forced the postponement of multiple sporting events over the weekend, including basketball games both Friday and Saturday and wrestling on Saturday. On Friday, St. Labre sent students home early due to freezing rain followed by snow, forcing the basketball games against Broadus to be cancelled. Several local rodeo competitors won money at the 44th Annual Montana Pro Rodeo Circuit Finals held at Montana Expo Park in Great Falls on January 12-14, 2023. Joey Williams won the third round of the Breakaway Roping with the finals fast time of 1.9 seconds, garnering $2439.68. Joey was also the Year-end Circuit Champion, with $12,090.34 total winnings for the year. Her horse, Baybe Bullet, took home the honors for Montana WPRA Horse of the Year. Eighteen teams competed at the Hettinger Classic Wrestling Tournament last weekend in Hettinger, North Dakota. Despite the small size of the town (around 1051), larger schools from around the area are drawn to the two day event, including teams such as Glendive, Miles City, Sturgis, and assorted more local schools, as well as your Broadus Hawks. Despite missing two games just before Christmas due to weather, the three week hiatus between games proved to be no huge problem for the Hawk and Lady Hawk Varsity teams, as they crushed Terry and Plevna over the weekend. The Broadus Hawk Wrestling season got underway last weekend at the Sidney Eagle Invitational, which featured 27 teams from as far flung locales as California and Colorado, and many large Montana and North Dakota schools. Joey Williams of Volborg placed 6th at the Wrangler National Finals Breakaway Roping last week, in Las Vegas. Williams won Round 7 of the event with a 1.9 second performance. Cadee Williams of Weatherford, Texas was the overall winner. Williams horse, Baybe, which was raised on the family ranch and trained by Williams’ husband, Taylor, won the Nutrena Horse of the Year Award. With the end of volleyball season, retiring Coach Gordon Archer provided us with some information on the Lady Hawks' year, which included a number of team records.
