Despite multiple members of the team absent from meets for the spring concert, BPA Nationals, and personal reasons such as a funeral, the Broadus track team soldiered on to a team win at the small meet in Baker last week, and placed well at the Harlo/Park City meet in Laurel. At the Baker meet, the Hawk boys won the meet, beating larger teams such as Baker and Bowman, ND. The Lady Hawks placed third overall. At the Harlo/Park City Meet the team members performed exceptionally well, with 14...

Broadus Track competed in one of two scheduled meets last week due to weather delays, and the meet at Laurel in which they competed was shut down early due to weather. Montana’s fickle spring weather cut the Laurel Iron Horse track meet short last Tuesday, after a hail storm buffeted the area in the midst of the meet. Broadus Head Track Coach Jerry Coulter told us that he estimated ½” of moisture fell on the area, essentially stalling all-track related activities. Before the weather caused delay, Broadus athletes were turning in excellent perfo...

The girls team saw the majority of increase – from 4 to 13 this season, while the boys team increased from 8 to 12. The increase in numbers means Broadus is able to have par...
The High School Golf team has 19 athletes on the team, with 11 boys and 8 girls, 11 of which are returning to the team. We spoke with Head Golf Coach Chad Gatlin on Tuesday about how their season is going thus far, as the weather has precluded any competitions. “We’ve been able to practice on the course, dodging snow drifts,” he said. “We’ve also been doing some golfing in the simulator [at the Birdie Garage], which has helped.” With the ongoing weather issues this spring, early season competitions have been cancelled or postponed across the...
Just over one year ago, Hazel Kinzer, then eight years old, noticed weakness and pain in her hands and feet. Over several days her symptoms progressed to tripping and falling on the soccer field during recess. Hazel's parents, Cody and Russ Kinzer of Broadus, brought her to Miles City and then on to Billings to ascertain a diagnosis. In Billings, Hazel was diagnosed with Guillain–Barré syndrome. GBS, as it is commonly known, is a rapid-onset disorder characterized by muscle weakness, brought on...
With the 2022-23 basketball season now finished for the year and shelved into our memory banks, we thought we’d take a look at some of the highlights of the boys’ year, which culminated at the state tournament. As a team, the 22-23 Hawks had a number of accomplishments, such as winning the Conference, District, and Division, while they also had several interesting statistical records, when compared to previous Broadus teams. Some individual records may be seen as controversial when comparing the years of old, such as varsity eligibility of cur...

By Karen Capp The Broadus 7th grade boys basketball team, AKA the "Airballers" lost their first game to a tough Miles City team, on Saturday morning at the Cowtown Classic in Miles City. We worked very hard in the first half, giving them a run for their money. Brock Gali was 60% from the free-throw line, but in total we had 7 for 27 Free throws. Their 1-3-1 trap defense got us worked up and their 5 three-pointers in the second half took the wind out of our sails. The final score was 27 to 62....

The Barnhart brothers both did well in their division with Jesse placing second, and Tizer had to fight his way back on the consolation side finishing 6th. Sophie Ostendorf walked through her competition as she has all year and found herself in a dog fight for first and second place. She fell short of her goal of compl...

Broadus Head Coach Dustin Lanke provided a great summary of the state games, in his own words: Broadus 66 Lone Peak 38 We had a slow start and trailed after the first quarter, but after that we were able...

That feat was accomplished last Saturday in Lockwood, as the Hawks took out Melstone to bring home the title in the championship. The Hawks swept into the divisional tournament as the #1 seed from the 4C, and faced Plenty Coups in the first round of the tournament, on Wednesday evening. Broadus had little trouble with the Warriors, as the game got into a running clock early in the...

With the Lady Hawks down one of their star players in the divisional tournament, Abi Krantz, following a knee injury, Broadus was left with only seven players for a must-win game against Broadview/Lavina, and later a battle for third and fourth place against Melstone. Broadus made their way to that game via a second place District trophy two weeks ago in Miles City, and faced Custer/Hysham in the first round of the divisional tournament, last week in Lockwood. Broadus was quite familiar with...

Perhaps the Lady Hawks had a bit of first game jitters, or perhaps Broadus' first round bye gave the Wibaux Lady Longhorns some early momentum at the 4C District Tournament last Friday in Miles City, as Broadus fell behind 1-5 in the first quarter. Over the past several years, Wibaux has been a team which stopped Broadus in its tracks, and the girls had to overcome that feeling of a connection with past performances in order to win. With a quick regroup the Lady Hawks found their footing and...
