Kicking off their season against Plentywood at home on Friday evening, the Broadus Hawk Varsity football team lost by a score of 0-40. With fifteen players on the team for the season, only 12 were suited up due to the need for the mandatory number of practices before game play and other factors, according to Head Coach Brett Emmons. The Broadus Lady Hawk Volleyball team began their season at the Eastern Montana Classic Tournament in Glendive last weekend, facing a number of high ranking teams from across the eastern end of Big Sky Country, including teams such as Circle, North Country, Forsyth, Plentywood, Jordan, and the JV teams from Miles City and Glendive. Placing ninth out of a field of 36 teams, while beating AA Billings Senior and a variety of Class A schools, the Broadus boys cross country team performed very well in their first meet of the year, last Friday at the Billings Invitational Meet at Amend Park in Yellowstone County. During the hot weather last week, the Hawk football team used the county swimming pool to their advantage, now that the pool is staying open after the beginning of school. The team conducted a conditioning workout in the pool, with half the team doing water aerobics while the other half treaded water in the 9 foot end, and then switching out, followed by a team sprint from one end of the pool and back, and then a free swim. By Jim Collins 18 players turned out for the first annual TRECO TRIO Golf Tournament in Broadus on August 12. A portion of the entry fees went to benefit Education Round Up, a scholarship program for graduating Seniors. Education Round Up is a program through TRECO where members can choose to round up their monthly bill to the nearest dollar and put this spare change into the scholarship fund. The local Ducks Unlimited chapter held a trap shoot on Saturday at the rifle range in Broadus, with 13 shooters competing in the event, per event organizer Jeff Noble. Jeff Faycosh of Miles City was the top shooter at the event, winning a shotgun for his efforts. The Inaugural Kelly Compton Memorial Golf Scramble was held July 15th, at Rolling Hills Golf Course in Broadus. Nine teams of four players competed through smoky conditions in the tournament. A silent auction was held for four high school players, with winning bidders adding one of the high school players to their team, to make a fifth golfer. In the 7th year of competition at the Franklin Memorial Rope N Stroke in Broadus, the top winning team consisted of Chad Gatlin, Dan Bird, and Jake Foulger, amongst a field of 11 teams. The Broadus Wrestling Club will be hosting a wrestling tournament for youngsters this Friday, at the high school gym in Broadus beginning at 6 pm. Thomas Oylear led the final two laps of the 3200, his strongest event, before Manhattan Christian's Oren Arthun had enough steam to pass Oylear at the finish. Last weekend, the Lady Hawk golf team achieved something which hasn't been accomplished by a girls team from Broadus. Until now. Their second place trophy from state golf is the first time a Broadus girls team has achieved a second place trophy at state in any sport. The Broadus track team absolutely crushed the competition at the 4C District Meet, held last week in Baker. The meet was originally scheduled for Thursday, but was rescheduled for a day earlier due to impending rain in the forecast.
