On Monday night of last week, on the evening before the blizzard descended on Eastern Montana the Broadus School Board Trustees met for their regularly scheduled monthly meeting. First on the agenda were a number of resignations, including Trustee Patrick Emmons, as well as Head Football Coach Ross Randall and Head Boys Basketball Coach Mike Richards. We reached out to all three gentlemen but did not receive comments about their resignations as of press time. Additionally, the board accepted a request for a one year unpaid leave of absence...
A contentious school board meeting stuffed to the gills with agenda items on Monday night left us scrambling for additional details early Tuesday morning, as the brunt of a spring storm bore down on Broadus and the surrounding area. On “normal” months, we have around 13 hours from conclusion of the school board meeting to confirm details, write up an article summarizing the meeting, and lay the article out on a page in anticipation of printing, while also allowing time for a modicum of sleep somewhere within that time period. That timeline is...
By Connie Barnhart What is "patriotism" and how would you represent it artistically? That was the challenge for our local PRCDHS students. The entrants answered this question by creating a drawing or painting and an essay explaining how the artwork portrayed their idea of patriotism. The 2022 VFW Patriotic Art Contest was sponsored by our local VFW Auxiliary Post 1595. The contest was coordinated by Chair of Patriotic Art, Margaret Scoles and PRCDHS art teacher, Connie Barnhart. Monetary...
It doesn’t seem like it was that long ago, I was going through the teacher education program learning how to prepare a proper lesson plan. The entire curriculum was almost entirely academically based with little or no emphasis placed on classroom management, motivating learners, or the teaching of values. As a young educator, I was naive to believe education consisted solely of presenting the curriculum effectively, correcting homework, and assigning grades. Educators are expected to teach values each day without even giving it much thought. S...
The PRCDHS After Grad Committee is seeking donations for the Class of 2022’s After Grad Party. The annual event provides a safe and fun celebration for graduates and other students to celebrate on the night following graduation. In years past the event featured things like a DJ, entertainers, interactive games, carnival games, photo booths, and door prizes, while each graduating senior also received a special gift. In order to make this special night happen, the committee has been seeking donations. If you are interested in donating, p...

Next they coded the robot to drive out of a parking spot...
By: Libby Nisley, Advisor Our Broadus BPA chapter was a strong force in the state competition March 13th-15th. There were around 1,200 competitors from over 100 chapters at the conference. We had 10 students qualify for the National competition to be held in Dallas, TX on May 4th-8th, which is a difficult task indeed. Many of our students had a tough turnaround from State Basketball participation right onto the bus early the next morning to compete in BPA. These students are truly well-rounded...

With the proper spelling of "intoxicating" in the 9th round of the finals, Justin Aye, Broadus 7th grader took home top honors at the County Spelling Bee last Thursday. Addison Draine, 8th grader, went round for round with Aye in the finals until being marked incorrect for spelling "hurtle" as "hurdle", which was spelled correctly but apparently not the word the judges were seeking. When asked to use the word in a sentence, the sentence used dealt with a footrace, hurtling down the track in the...

The Broadus School Board Trustees met for their regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Monday evening, with all members in attendance except for Danny Johnson and Rob Jones. In the proposal, Nisley and a group of teachers had presented a variety of calendar ideas to other staff members, with the most popular schedule presented to the board. One idea in the calendar w...
By Broadus Schools Superintendent Jim Hansen “Sometimes we don't appreciate how good we have it-so we continue to concentrate on what is wrong” that was my reply to a recent email. We would all like everything to be perfect and each of us has our own definition of “perfection.” In most cases someone’s definition of perfection changes depending on who they believe should receive the most benefit. A few years ago, I gave a presentation on perceptions and perspective and how my brother’s opinion frequently differed from mine. Perception...
By Liz Riter On February 23, 2022, Liz Riter and Sarah Fortner with the Powder River Conservation District met with the Kindergarten class to teach them about food groups and pizza. First, we talked about foods raised on our local ranches and gardens. The students then sorted pictures of food into the different food groups; the grain group, meat group, vegetable group, fruit group, and milk group. We built pretend pizzas out of felt while continuing to discuss food groups. Last, we had a snack...

One of our most important functions is to employ the best employees to work with your children. As most of you are aware, there is a national shortage of workers. Education was already experiencing a reduction in the number of college graduates entering the field of education, and the national shortage of workers has only complicated the matter. We are competing financially with our neighboring states and other Montana school districts. The competition for educators between schools has led to some interesting discussions with fellow...
