Brutal cold and wind punctuated the week before Christmas, as ambient air temperatures fell to -31 in Broadus on December 23rd. The record low for that date was -35 from 1989, and other days that week had record lows from 1983 and 1989 of up to -47 degrees ambient temperature. On Monday night the Town Council passed the second and final reading of its new “ordinance on community decay”, which will go into effect on January 20th of 2023. The new ordinance updates the previous ordinance from 2010, and deals with junk, rubble, and debris found in the town. The ordinance covers a wide range of junk – some examples include junk vehicles, old appliances, tires, cardboard, and a host of other unsightly items. A severe winter storm pummeled the Northern Great Plains last week, forcing road and school closures in Powder River County. The storm dumped a varied amount of snow around the area, with much difficulty to be found in measuring snow depth due to the piercing winds which blew the powdery snow into massive drifts, yet left other areas bare and devoid of snow.
