By Adam Johnson, PR County EMS Director As temperatures during the day are increasing community members should be aware of the lower temperatures at night. These fluctuations allow for the current snowpack around town and in the community to harden and become slick. With the recent rain this can increase the chances that minimally slick surfaces can become treacherous sheets of ice as the temperatures drop. Residents and community members are encouraged to keep a watchful eye on these situations as slip and fall injuries increase, especially...

By Raequel Roberts, UM News Service MISSOULA – For an animal whose population barely tops 2,000, Montana’s grizzly bears hold an outsized presence in the psyche and politics of the Treasure State. Small wonder, then, that Montanans, though likely never to have seen a grizzly, hold strong opinions about the legendary bruins – opinions they readily shared for a study by the University of Montana and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, which was just published in the journal Conservation Science and Practice. “We got about a 40% response rate from the...

In two previous columns, I described the unsuccessful effort to build a dam on the Powder River three miles south of Moorhead during the 1940s. My first column outlined the general history of the project as the Reclamation Bureau prepared for the structure's construction. An initial congressional appropriation of $900,000 (in 1947) included the creation of a base camp for engineers and workers. My second column described how the opposition, based primarily in Wyoming, organized themselves and...
A failed transformer at a Northwestern Energy substation resulted in a power outage across much of Southeastern Montana on Monday, including TRECO customers in and around Powder River County supplied by the Colstrip line. The power went out around 8:30 AM, with temperatures in Broadus around -8. Generators at the courthouse were initially not running until repairs were made mid-morning, and a generator at the elementary school in Broadus was waiting on a part to be installed prior to the outage, so the schools had no power, as the high school g...

By Tom Herzog It’s always nice to have a little variety from the pulpit. Well, this Sunday there will be a far more youthful preacher. Luke Herzog, son of Pastor Tom and Carla Herzog will bring the message about Isaac from the books of Genesis and Hebrews. This conversation about Isaac occurred while Luke and his wife Hannah were back for Christmas break from MSU-Bozeman. Luke made several observations that might be missed because we get so familiar with these scripture stories. When asked if he’d consider sharing a message about some of his...
By Raymond Ragsdale On Wednesday the 18th of January, Clint Pedersen presented a training for the volunteer fire department on structure fires. New volunteers that attended were trained on the basics of structure fires. Clint started the training going over the fire triangle (oxygen, heat, & fuel), explaining how fire needs these elements to burn, and how removing any one of these elements can slow the process of fire allowing the fire to be controlled or extinguished. We watched some videos on fire behavior, air flow paths, reading smoke and...
By Senior Center Director Tammy Jackman Can you believe it is February already? My goodness January just flew by. I think it was because we were so busy here at the center that when we finally looked at the calendar it was the end of the month. February will be equally busy, I think. We started the cooking class on January 12th. It was a HUGE success, with about 15 people each week. At the end of the 9 week course everyone will receive a new Insta Pot. Each week is a wonderful recipe, week 1 was kale and quinoa salad, week 2 turkey spaghetti...
