The Broadus Elementary and High Schools were evacuated on Thursday, December 14th around lunch time after an emailed bomb threat was received by at least two employees at the school. Law enforcement was quickly called and both schools were immediately evacuated, according to Broadus Schools Principal Denise Ternes, who we spoke to Monday. A special meeting of the Broadus Town Council was held last Wednesday to discuss the potential for an increase in water and garbage rates, as detailed in last week’s Examiner. A rate analysis determined that the water and garbage systems are in need of a rate increase to pay for themselves (as directed by state law). The special counsel meeting moved to go forward with those rate increases. The Broadus Town Council met with Bobbie Shular of Montana Rural Water Systems, Inc. (MRWS) last week to discuss a rate analysis that she completed on the Broadus water system. MRWS is a Great Falls based association providing training, regulatory updates, rate structuring, and technical assistance to Montana entities with drinking water and waste water systems. The Broadus School Board held their monthly meeting Monday evening. One major item on the agenda was the layout of an upcoming Comprehensive Needs Assessment, which is required by the Montana Office of Public Instruction. A survey featuring a variety of questions regarding the school will be given to groups including teachers, students, and parents/ community members. Broadus received a trace of precipitation on the month, falling on November 3rd. A “trace” is defined by the National Weather Service as an amount less than 0.01”.
