By Shane & Kesa Copps Happy New Year to Powder River County, our friends and neighbors. We hope the new year is prosperous and that we all are able to stay safe. We had a very busy year in 2019 and want to share some of these things with you. Our two entities combined for a record-breaking year of 167 responses. This is up from the last three years by about 35%. We did this with fewer EMTs as we had a couple EMTs who have been unable to go due to work or personal issues. We still have 8 EMTs on our roster but some live at distances that p...

Senate District 19, The first year of my term as your Senator has now come to a close. A lot has happened in that year and I want to take a moment to recap it. The year started with Montana’s 66th Legislative session. During the session I sponsored legislation that protected our property rights, grew Montana manufacturing, and recognized both our military veteran and cowboy heritage. I also had the privilege to carry both the student consent bill and the bill that eliminated the criminal statute of limitations for child sexual abuse through t...

With 2019 in the books, we looked back through a year of newspapers to find the memorable moments from the year gone by. 2019 marked the 100 year anniversary of Powder River County becoming a Montana County, breaking away from Custer County in 1919. Over the 4th of July this year, a 100-year celebration was held which drew a large number of folks to the community. When visitors arrived, many commented on the lush conditions of the area – green grass and standing water dotted the landscape, and a deluge soaked the Freedom Run on the morning o...

Where are these new customers and how do companies find them? Of course, there is more than one answer to that question but, one possibility might be government agencies. Perhaps you think that government agencies would never purchase from your company because it’s too small? Think again. Each year, government agencies purchase millions from Montana companies, mostly small businesses. You may be surprised at...

Thursday, December 21-28, 1989 The Outcasts of Pumpkin Creek (Childhood memories of Gene Mackin) Baseball was the great Sunday afternoon pastime on Little Pumpkin Creek in the 1930s. My family rarely missed a game. In fact, the only game I can remember missing was during a diphtheria outbreak. One of my sisters had been exposed while babysitting. The doctor thought we could infect the whole county if we attended the game so he quarantined us and told us we’d be arrested if seen there. A baseball team from Pumpkin Creek organized in 1932 and m...

Throughout the month, several snow storms blanketed light amounts of snow across the area, with the bulk of the early storms passing around to the south and hitting the Gillette region. In between storms, the days were seasonably pleasant, and overall the month of November was fairly nice – perhaps more pleasant than much of October, which w...
