Courtesy MT Dept of Revenue As Montanans look forward to summer, the Montana Department of Revenue has a reminder: Federal and state income taxes are due July 15. “Montanans have handled a lot in these past few months, so I thank all those who have already filed their returns,” said Gene Walborn, director of the Department of Revenue. “For those who haven’t, this is a good time to make sure you have your tax information available and find any help you may need to file.” Filing electronically is the easiest and most secure way to submit your...
Thursday, June 28, 1990 Wandering black bear may have headed home Being a celebrity may have been too much for a wandering black bear, who apparently has fled the area in search of a less hectic atmosphere. The bruin, which showed up unexpectedly north of Broadus last Wednesday evening, seemed only occasionally bothered by the strange goings on of man. A few occasions were apparently enough, however, and the bear may have headed home, but not before causing quite a stir among people who have never seen one in the area before. According to Game...
4-H member Reece Emmons (near left) said learning to lead such a big animal has been a challenge. She likes learning about caring for a 4-H animal and taking care of her steer, Stan. Younger sister Maci and brothers Trace and Quincy (far left) like playing with their bum calves and giving them bottles. 4-H Family Feature comes to us courtesy of PR Extension Office....
4-H members Noah, John and Hanna Dudek (below) work together on fixing a generator donated to them by a teacher at school (thank you!). They like doing the small engine project because, "we like working with Dad in the garage. The challenging part is putting the engines back together after taking them apart to find and fix what is wrong with them." Living in the country, they discovered social distancing was easy, "we just stayed home. It was weird to not go to church. We studied, cooked,...
On Sunday, local volunteer firefighters, ranchers, and BLM crews responded to a large wildland fire on Fire Gulch, around 16 miles southwest of Broadus. The fire is believed to have started from a lightning storm which blew through the area early Sunday. As of Tuesday morning, the fire sat at around 2885 acres. (Updated: the fire had burned 3880 acres, as of Thursday). 28 personnel, seven engines, and one helicopter were on the fire, per the National Situation Report, and we heard of at least one local dozer. The cost at that point to fight...
The Powder River County primary election results were certified on Monday. Powder River County saw a 70% voter turnout in the June 2nd, 2020 primary election. This was the highest turnout in a primary since 1992, which is as far back as we could find records. The turnout low was 35%, in 2002. Turnout throughout the state was high this spring, with the mail-in only ballots cited as a primary reason for the high turnout. In local elections, Incumbent County Commissioner Rod Schaffer beat Challenger Ted Amsden in the Republican County...
Recent shoppers at Broadus IGA may have seen some new faces in the store, which were very recognizable for longer term residents – those faces belonged to Mark Wenzel and Larry Woolston. Wenzel and Woolston, both previous owners at Broadus IGA, recently partnered together to buy the store from Rita Harden, who had owned the business in recent years. Wenzel and Woolston, who have a combined 100+ years of grocer experience, along with the Broadus IGA crew have been revamping the store, opening u...

"Good horses and good neighbors' are a central theme to these pioneers who have been and continue to be pillars of our community," added Rumph. Virginia will celebrate her 100th birthday on August 12th, "if I live that long!", stated Virginia in a recent c...
By Darlynn Williams, PR County Public Health Nurse Over the past several weeks, we have seen a lot of change. Businesses closed or reduced, school and other events canceled. There has been shock, fear, denial, anger, depression, fatigue, testing of boundaries and so many more emotions. Everyone is feeling quarantine fatigue in some form. The goal of public health, locally and across the state, is to protect the health and safety of all Montana citizens. The advice given is the best way to stay healthy, however, human behavior doesn’t alw...

Thursday, June 21, 1990 Young man fulfills dream -by Esther Barnhart A young man with an unusual curiosity stayed with Elliott and Esther Barnhart several days last week. Ben Tansey of near Olympia, WA had seen Epsie on the map as a boy, and had a dream of going there someday. It wasn’t until after he graduated from Evergreen State College and became a staff writer on a weekly newspaper that he saved enough money for the trip. Upon inquiring through the library system, Tansey was pleasantly surprised to get a copy of Esther Barnhart’s boo...

Courtesy PR Historical Museum Although typically open the first week of June, the museum board has voted not to allow public access until Montana reaches Phase 3 of the reopening plan. This decision is based on the limitations of our facility, sanitation requirements and most importantly, the safety of our many vulnerable volunteers. Limited, pre-scheduled, private tours/viewings can still be arranged by calling 436-2474 or 436-2352. Unfortunately, due to current COVID-19 restrictions the Homesteader Days event scheduled for June 15-19 has...

Maddie Brownfield holds her 4-H Cat "Adventure". In addition to the cat project, Maddie has been working on other projects, including sewing, cooking and photography. During the "stay at home" phase, she decided to sew masks and donated them to many of the gals around town who were high risk and asking for masks. She and her sewing partner Emily made 20+ masks! She's been working with Adventure kitty so he doesn't freak out when she takes him into to town for the fair. Maddie has just a couple...
