April 12, 1990 Powderville CPO again threatened Once again, only fast action by a number of groups, many individuals and a congressman or two has saved the historical Powderville Contract Postal Station Office (CPO) from being arbitrarily closed without warning, by Billings officials of this postal district. In information from Ronnie Schaffer the office is 62-63 miles from Miles City and 34-35 miles from Broadus. He said his wife, Nina, took the work for what was to be a temporary period in order to keep the office open. That was in 1979 he...
Non-residents traveling into Montana are now directed to self-quarantine for 14 days, per Governor Bullock’s directive issued Monday. The quarantine rule also applies to residents who may travel out of state – that is, if a Broadus resident travels out of state, even for a shopping trip to Gillette or Rapid City, they will be expected to self quarantine. Sheriff Allen Drane, Jr. told us that thus far his department has had to remind a few individuals and businesses of the stay at home orders and business closure directives, but for the mos...
By PR County Health Nurse Darlynn Williams As of 3/30/20 there are no cases of COVID-19 in Powder River County. The number of positive COVID-19 cases in surrounding counties and states continues to grow and the threat is ever present. It is more important now than ever before to continue to shelter in place. Stay home unless you must leave for supplies, work or to care for family. Parents – your teens need to stay home with you and connect through their social media or online games. You need to say “no” when they want to get together with frien...

A recent trend with the spread of coronavirus and subsequent shortage of protective masks for emergency personnel is the 3D printed mask. Broadus First Responder Shane Copps has started building 3D printed masks with the use of the school's 3D printer. The idea blossomed after a story came out in which a Billings neurosurgeon, Dr. Dusty Richardson, started building masks with the help of Billings Dentist Spencer Zaugg. The duo were able to use Zaugg's 3D printers to build masks in about two...
With COVID-19 at our doorstep, we thought it prudent to contact some former Broadus residents who live in more affected areas, to hear their thoughts on the matter. Alessandro Galieni spent the 2018-19 year attending high school in Broadus, and living with the Kuhbacher family as a foreign exchange student. Alessandro, or “Al”, lives in Sant ‘Elidio, Italy, which is in the Marche region – which just happens to border Lombardy, the region hardest hit by coronavirus in Italy. As of Monday, 6,818 people had died of the virus in the region,...
With the outbreak of COVID-19 across Montana and the world, we thought we’d take a look back at another pandemic which massively affected the people of Montana, just over 100 years ago. In 1918, an H1N1 influenza epidemic swept across the world, infecting an estimated one-third of the world’s population, and killing around 3-5% of the world population at that time – more than died in World War One. 675,000 people succumbed to the illness in the US. The virus killed so many people that the life expectancy in the US actually dropped by 12 years...

A local history column, written by Historian Shane Dunning. Shane may be reached at [email protected]. In southern Rosebud County, on private land just off the east side of the Tongue River (near Birney), is an isolated ravine with the ominous name "Deadman's Gulch." The origin of that name has been lost to anything resembling "official" history, but thankfully the story still exists in the rich oral history of the area. Back in the 1880's the area was very sparsely populated by white set...

Thursday, April 5, 1990 Plane carrying Iva Kolstad makes emergency landing A light airplane carrying Lt. Governor Allen Kolstad’s wife Iva was forced into an emergency landing situation on a county road near Broadus last Saturday night. Mrs. Kolstad and pilot Roger Lincoln left Broadus Saturday night’s Republican dinner at the local VFW Hall, en route to Ledger. About 20 miles out, around 9 p.m., the plane ran into a severe weather front that forced Lincoln to turn back. Once at the Broadus airport, however, they were unable to land because of...

The Montana Department of Revenue is warning all Montanans to watch out for scams related to the recently announced federal stimulus package. With recent news of direct payments to Americans based on their 2018 or 2019 tax information, scammers are already contacting individuals, and especially tax preparers, by phone, email, and text, trying to solicit personal, financial and tax information that can be used for identity theft and financial fraud. “It’s tragic that even during a national crisis, criminals are taking advantage of fear and unc...

Courtesy Darlynn Williams, PR Public Health Nurse Coronavirus COVID-19 is not a manmade weapon. There is no credible information to support this claim. Researchers are trying to find the exact source of the virus but all indications point to bats as the source. Only the elderly get infected. False, anyone of any age can be infected. The information available indicates that those under age 60, generally have a milder course of illness. The concern is that younger folks won’t self-isolate when ill and will be the source of infection for others wh...
Update, 4/3/20 The Powder River Stockman's Club is now closed. Boot & Tack is no longer going to be open on Saturdays (starting April 2020) for the time being. A local history column, written by Historian Shane Dunning. Shane may be reached at [email protected]. In 1909, newspapers such as the The Sheridan Post called it “the question of the range.” It was a euphemism for the political, economic, and cultural conflicts that resulted from the decades-old Federal land policy usually referred to as “open range.” In Powder River country, that question of the range often turned violent in ways the local legal systems seemed unable (or unwilling) to address. In 1900, sheepmen John Daut and R.R. Se...
