4-H Family Feature - My name is Rheanna Schroeder (pictured at far left) and I am a member of the Biddle Busy Beavers 4-H Club. This year I am showing a market hog and market steer. I enjoy washing my steer, Charlie, as well as feeding him grass and lying with him under the fans. I like racing my pig, Thunder, when we go on walks and feeding him treats. He really likes fruit and cookies. The most challenging thing for me is working with these animals for so long and gaining their trust and then...
As of Tuesday, June 30th, fire restrictions (to include any fireworks bans) had not been implemented in Powder River County. Speaking to the County Commissioners on Monday, we learned they had discussed fire restrictions with the County Fire Marshal last week, but wanted to wait and see about the rainy weather, as well as the potential for a multi-county fire restriction which may come out at some point. In other county news, the commissioners responded to concerns by local citizens regarding the dangers from cement and debris from the old...

4-H member Ashton Madsen (far left) said, "I like working with my steer and learning new things every day. The most challenging thing is teaching him how to lead because he isn't that tame. For social distancing we stay home and go to town when we have to." Shyla Madsen (near left) reports that, "My favorite project is working with my two-year-old colt, Spur, and figuring out how a horse works and responds to you. The challenging part is making sure I don't create bad habits. I participate in...

On Saturday afternoon, an ursine visitor traveled near Broadus. Where the visitor traveled from, and where he is traveling to, is still a mystery. The Powder River Sheriff’s Office was alerted by a passing motorist of a black bear, which was seen along the river from the Powder River Bridge. Sheriff’s Deputy John Gatlin drove out to investigate, and confronted the hairy traveler at around fifty yards distance, on the Broadus side of the bridge, and headed towards town. Gatlin jumped out of his patrol car with the intent of sending the bear els...
By Powder River County Health Officer Sean Hill As many people know, on Friday, June 19, 2020 we issued directives identifying a positive COVID-19 case in Powder River County. It may be mild or it might be severe. If you happen to have grown up during the period of large Polio outbreaks, you w...

Courtesy PR Extension Office The prediction for a heavy grasshopper infestation this summer has certainly proven correct – memories of 1988 are being shared by those who dealt with a severe infestation at that time, according to Powder River Extension Agent Mary Rumph. “Unfortunately, all the environmental factors that could have helped reduce the population didn’t happen,” said Rumph. “For example, cold, wet weather is very destructive to newly hatched grasshoppers. Alternatively, very dry winter and spring conditions also can be harmful to...
