    In local elections, John Olson won the County Commissioner race against Incumbent Rod Schaffer. Olson, an Independent, picked up 603 votes, compared to Republican candidate Schaffer’s 492 votes. Schaffer narrowly won the primary election over challenger Ted Amsden by a margin of 48 votes. Vanna Byrd will be the next Clerk of District Court, as she garnered 1051 votes in an uncontested election.     Drought conditions persisted across Powder River County through the first half of October, with scant precipitation and high temps topping out at 85 in Broadus during the first two weeks of the month. The second half of the month saw a dramatic shift to wet and cold, with record cold temps recorded across the area.     With a week left until Election Day, 350 out of 595 absentee ballots sent to voters in Powder River County had been returned, according to the Montana Secretary of State. Powder River County is one of only 10 counties in the state to hold in-person voting this fall, with the other 46 conducting their elections through mail-in ballots only.
