4th of July activities kicked off last Friday with a home run derby, with 18 entries in the men's division, and nine in the lady's division. The overall home run champion was Wrye Williams, and the women's longest ball champ was Libby Nisley. A truck wreck on Hwy 212 just west of Epsie on July 1st resulted in the death of a 64 year old woman, identified as Debra Sloan of Texas. Local emergency responders including the Broadus VFD, ambulance crew, and Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call at 10:37 in the morning to the incident. The wreck is believed to have been caused by a blown front left tire on the semi, resulting in the truck leaving the road and turning onto its passenger side. A spate of fires kicked off over the first few days of July across the local area. On July 1, the Box Elder fire, located near the Camp Creek Road in NW Powder River County burned 1700 acres, with federal, state, and local resources responding to the incident. Several fires started in the Biddle and Belle Creek area on July 2nd and 3rd, with the largest – the Rice Fire, burning 840 acres. The Montana Department of Justice’s State Crime Lab reported 41 fentanyl-related deaths in 2020, up from 19 in 2019. Broadus has a new all-time high record high temperature, recorded last Tuesday, June 15th. The new high of 110 was recorded at the official weather station at the courthouse, beating the previous all time high of 108, which was attained on three different dates: on June 20, 1988, July 5, 1937, and July 14, 2002. The previous record for June 15th was 97, in 1987. Two other days in June have been record daily highs in Broadus, including the 95 degree high on June 3rd, and 104 on June 10th.
